Alberta passes distracted driving law
Quote:
Alberta's distracted driving legislation — believed to be the most comprehensive in the country — received final reading at the provincial legislature in Edmonton Wednesday.
Bill 16 not only bars people from phoning, texting or emailing while driving, it also prohibits actions such as reading, grooming or writing while behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.
But the legislation does permit the use of hands-free phones. Emergency officials including police officers, firefighters and paramedics are exempt from the law while on the job.
|
Quote:
The proposed fine for those who run afoul of the new law is $172 with no demerit points. Johnston expects the law will come into effect by June 2011 after the province launches a public education program.

I didn't read the law, but am I allowed to mete out justice for infractors?
It would bring me great joy to beat the ever loving fecal matter out of the texting-while-driving-farkwads who veer into my lane.

Could we make it $500 instead of $172. Make sure that all the people that do this really get nailed. Almost as bad as drunk drivers.

I'm sure I'm the only one on holier than CP, but I'm on my phone a lot in the car. I have the Bluetooth and don't use it very often. I guess that'll be changing soon!
I'm not trying to argue that this shouldn't come into force; it should and the sooner the better. Even so, still kind of sucks!

I'm really glad that this law has made the books, well done Gov't.
The only thing that *does* bother me......isn't this basically careless driving? Call it what you will, but I think there should be hefty demerits if you get caught. (Careless is 6 Points)

The fine amount is a little low, but this is a good start.

While I agree with the legislation, I can only see this becoming another cash cow for the gov't.

i have to disagree - a few weeks ago i was behind some a$$hat on deerfoot - traffic was crawling so he was multi-tasking (i was behind him and could see his eyes in his rearview mirror and they were looking down for long stretches of time) - traffic magically cleared up and he maintained his pace of 20 kph. i was finally able to pass him, and then lose him behind me as he could not apparently find his accelerator.......
it scares the hell out of me when i get passed by a 20 yr old on deerfoot who is speeding and texting..........

^ya and texting is a whole other issue. I'm just talking on the phone. I get it though. I need to dial, and clearly that isn't a whole different than texting (albeit shorter duration).
Anyone here care to say they've been involved in an accident when on their phone? Not sure I've actually met anyone who has...despite the evidence to the contrary. I know lots of people who have been in accidents, lots who talk on the phone and am not aware of anyone admitting to both (which doesn't prove anything, and maybe people just won't admit it). Just curious...

The more progressive parts of Canada have had similar laws on the books for awhile now.

Who grooms themselves while driving?
Women maybe, but men? I haven't seen any man shaving while driving for instance.

I have. I've also seen idiots reading newspapers (the Herald no less) and books. Eating food out of a bowl, putting makeup on, etc.
Hopefully the cops crack down hard on it. This is one cash cow I fully support.

NO I'm not kidding.
Just wait till all the complaints surface about over zealous cops writing tickets when no infraction occurred.
It will be just like the Mysterious quota they deny every time its brought up.
I will be curious to see the stats and revenue generated from this in a year or two....

Bought fricken time, now pass a law that states if your driving like your a terrified 80 year old woman in labour in the winter time they can pull you over for safety reasons and tow your car directly to the crusher.

My uncle used to shave and drive every morning while we commuted to work together.....it drove me crazy.
The irony is that we worked at the Foothills Hospital, so even if there was an accident, we'd still get to work.
