Bob Stauffer ‏@Bob_Stauffer 14s Smid deal in the works for at least a week. Burke has history with Smid from Anaheim days...and Flames need vet D with Giordano out

I like this. He's signed to a very reasonable deal and he'll give us size and durability to go along with steady play at the pack. Great partner for Brodie. Horak and Brossoit are expendable as they're behind in the pecking order. Horak being behind the glut of young centres we have that likely project to be decent 2nd liners at best but more likely bottom 6, and Brossoit with Gillies.

I like it. Smid is a good defenseman. 2004 draft pick.

Holy overreaction. Flames trade 2 depth prospects for a top 4 D and people freak out.

This is a good trade for the Flames. Knight and Gillies made these two guys totally expendable.

I like this trade for Calgary. Horak was never going to get the chance and Gillies makes Brossoit expendable. Nice work Feaster and staff.

Feel bad for Horak, I liked him. Never really seem to fit in, but he was a useful player. Brossoit is a huge wild card.

Smid is ok, at least he was ticked off the other day at pretty much the whole team. That makes me like him a bit more.

So rebuild is done, we're in win now mode? Trading prospects for defensive defensman seems to scream that...

I'm actually ok with this trade.. Broissoit is expendable and Horak was gonna have a rough time crackin the line up... Smid I'm kinda meh but he is better than Butler (he has been playing better lately) O'Brien and Billins

That's not true is it? Burke was GM of the Canucks when the Ducks drafted him in 2004.

Not super happy with losing Horak, but whatever, he was falling down the depth chart. Brossoit I really don't mind trading. Something about him bugs me, like he lacks mental toughness.

Really good trade. Horak has really been passed in the depth chart and I don't think will ever have had a good chance at being an NHLer with this team, especially as more prospects start making the Flames (2014 pick, Poirier).

Brossoit we didn't give enough time for IMO, but it is so tough to predict if a goalie will end up being an NHLer or not, they are so often overvalued by teams and fans, especially prospect goalies. Remember, there are only 60 NHL goalies at any time, it's just so hard to even break in, nevermind thrive as a goalie prospect. Not many go from ECHL to NHL starter, so I'm not too worried about it.

Smid is a quality defenseman, on the right side of 30 (only 27), big body, basically exactly the type of player this team needs right now.

Oilers have room for Horak to make a contribution with them, so I am happy that Horak will get a better chance there than he probably would have here. Don't think it'll bite us in the *** though. I guess we have now gotten Erixon for Smid, Wotherspoon and Granlund, still looks good to me!

I'd be much more horrified about this is I was on the Oilers side. I can see why we did this (and dont mind it at all)...I really don't see why they did.

Not a big fan of Horak leaving, but with Colborne's arrival and quality play of late, it really made him expendable.

Also, with Gillies and Ortio being around, plus Berra and Ramo, there's a glut of goalies. Gillies has appeared to be the higher end prospect thus far. Ideally you want to see one of them make the show as a #1 but there are no guarantees.

In the end, we need NHL ready defenceman, and while we have numerous defensive prospects, none are ready to step in.

I'm very ok with this. Flames don't need a forward or keeper that can't crack the line up. We have further along bubble players already. But D is another story and as a bonus I feel this makes the oilers worse.
