You never actually see the yellow/white stripes of left arm make contact with Doughty.
A few frames after the hit, it seems like his left elbow is actually between Doughty's body and left arm.
That being said, it did seem like Tkachuk "launched" himself into Doughty... so Tkachuk intended to make a hit of some kind.
Do I have a case for a shoulder-hit?

I came to the same conclusion... however, I'm not completely sure.

I'm assuming none of the people raging about the Tkachuk elbow ever watched Messier or Howe play. Howe elbowed someone worse than that on an average shift. Messier usually did it to guys who didn't even have the puck and weren't looking. It was a 2 minute minor penalty, nothing more.

Was at the game, watched lazar closely, looks awesome! Wasn't a big fan of adding him in unless necessary and he delivered! He reminds me of a smaller ferland with the crash bang but could be the first game excitement. Hopefully he builds on it if he's in next game

Even if it is a shoulder, I'm not sure it matters that much.
It was a deliberate strike to the head of an unsuspecting player who didn't have the puck.

I don't think it matters if he caught him with the elbow or upper arm. It looks like he deliberately throws it back, and I think if Doughty was an inch back and an inch over he would have caught nothing but elbow and been in worse shape. So I think the league has grounds to rule intent was there, but Doughty seems okay so it may all wash out.

If you read between the lines Doughty seems to be defending Tkachuk. It's kind of like the situation with Johnny where guys were calling slashes part of the game. I don't think Tkachuk was intentionally trying to hurt him I think he was just playing aggressive Doughty realizes that because they both tend to go at each other. I think a lot of other players on other teams respect what Tkachuk brings.

Yeah, other away around and we'd be screaming bloody murder. I love that Tkachuk plays with at edge, but that was dirty.

You're the second person to make this hilarious comparison.
As if anything Godie Howe or Messier did is relevant to whether or not this play was dirty or warrants supplemental discipline.

The other way around happened later with Brown on Gio and people have barely mentioned it.

Agreed, but I'd like to see plays that far over the line out of his game. I love the guys that ride "that" line, but that was nasty. I know that sometimes nasty is desirable, but tonight's situation didn't warrant it.
I see the calls for Tkachuk as a future captain and to me it's this stuff that has to come out of his repertoire if he ever wants to reach that lofty goal.
Not to be downer! Great game. Playoffs, here we &^%(ing come!

No it didn't, Brown's arms were down and got Gio with nothing but his shoulder.

Yeah but they played in an era where there were no replays. Hell even back in the 80s not every game was televised. Messier and Risebrough would have been suspended over a 100 games.
You can't get away with that crap anymore. Tkachuk will get a game.

Yeah, well, back in my day we didn't know how to make relevant comparisons!

I think we should start making irrelevant historical comparisons for more than just elbows.
Just think of how much more impressive Elliott's streak is when we compare him to the goaltenders of the 80s! They couldn't stop a beachball. By comparison Elliott is a god!
