Is Quick still out? Cause it seemed like Budaj was doing just fine in his place.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Some asking about Karri Ramo. He had minor knee surgery end of Dec to remove particles from same knee. Was expected. Hopes to return in Feb

In 3 games in the AHL .880sv% and 3.80gaa

Leafs claim former Flame Curtis McElhinney, who was put on waivers by Columbus yesterday.

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Karri Ramo has formally been released from his PTO by the Toronto Marlies. His injury rehab continues in Finland.

Really?

Wow, I thought he was done his injury rehab. Is this normal? Or is this injury something else?

sooo....he's pretty much done in the NHL barring a miracle comeback, yes?

I do feel bad for him. Had he not had that horrible knee injury late in the last season, he might have at least found a job as a backup. Hell, even Petr Budaj found a starting gig.

Yeah, still they is way worse things he could be stuck doing.

I think Ramo is an ideal backup goalie. The kinda guy who is inconsistent but can get hot for stretches. I can see him getting another NHL job if he plays well in the KHL. He's pretty comparable to Chad Johnson, who I'm sure will find NHL work next season.

I would think an ideal backup is someone who is consistently average versus someone who can be really good in spurts because you just need to ensure that he's not going to lose you the game when you put him in there.

Maybe he's more of an ideal 1B type guy.

Kahvi on HF boards give a bit of a update on Ramo.

Quote:
There was a short interview with Karri Rämö who has signed with Jokerit in today's Helsingin Sanomat

Quick translation of some selected parts, hopefully not much is lost in tranlation.

Quote:
"In the beginning [of my Flames career] there were comparisons to Kipper every day, and he was missed, but slowly it started fading", Rämö says after a Jokerit practice session.

It must have been difficult to be seen as a Kipper replacement, when one of the best goalies of the world had spent nine years with the club

"It didn't bother me, but it had an effect on the management", Rämö says and implies that the Calgary Flames went crazy over Kipper [to me this sounds like its said in a positive way, like they really liked him]
"It was fun to listen to those stories where they were remembering him".

"Anyone who tries to step into Kippers boots has a tough job to do. They'll need to search for a long time if they want a guy that's his caliber", Rämö says.
He also says he doesn't blame Donskoi for his injury as those things happen, and gives (or actually the reporter gives) a lot of credit for Leafs for his rehabilitation.

I liked Ramo and thought he did reasonably well in his time here(was our best goalie in his last year, although overpaid somewhat). I don't recall anyone actually comparing him to Kipper though. Both from Finland, sure, but I don't anyone really heaping extra pressure on him to become the next Kipper. That seems like it would be mostly in his own head.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Ortio seemed like Kipper incarnate. Sadly, that dream ended quickly.

It's such a damn shame the Flames couldn't do anything with Kipper backstopping them those years. He was an amazing goalie.

I'm already forgetting the feeling of what it's like to have an amazing goalie.

Ramo will always be one of my favourites. I've told this story before, but my son and I got to go under the stadium in Columbus after a game and many of the players were gracious enough to sign and pose for a picture with my then 8 year old son, but Ramo took it a step further. Players are on the way to the team bus when they come out, but after signing and posing for a picture, Ramo went back to the dressing room and got my son his game worn hat (he was the back-up that night). To this day, my son's favourite possession.

I liked Ramo a lot too and thought he was going to work out. But yeah, I have no memory of daily comparisons to Kipper. But maybe that makes for good reading in Finland.

In 2015-16 both the goalies were crap, but Ramo had recovered to the point where he was delivering league average goaltending consistently (.917ish if I remember) and we were toying with the idea of still making a run to sneak into the playoffs. I think the whole deal with the Kipper comparison was when he started using Kipper's 2006-08 pads, paint pattern and all.

Then he blows his knee out vs SJ and Hiller steps in to properly take control of the tank and give us Tkachuk as a parting gift.

Will remember Karri fondly though, especially for the whole "Fabulous" gif.
