Nadal gets (a very well deserved) time violation early in the match, continues to flagrantly waste time between points, nothing. A shot clock really would be nice at some point in the future.

it's 2017, Federer and Nadal are the two best players in the world at the combined age of 66. love them, hate them, whatever, as long as you respect them because tennis will be a lesser sport when they're finally gone.
Sunday July 16: Wimbledon Fedal Final IV. Tennis gods make it so.

It doesn't discredit his accomplishment(s), but it is certainly a valid point. It makes it difficult to watch sometimes. Would love to see a shot clock implemented. He's like the Sergio Garcia (circa early 2000s) of the ATP. Must be something in the Spanish water.

No doubt Nadal is by far the greatest of all time on clay.
A fantastic champion as well, coming back from multiple injuries, re-inventing his game and building on it. Amazing that IMO, the #1 and #2 players of all time are playing at the same time, and it's very clear that none of the new generation really has what it takes. I include players like Djokovic and Murray in the "new generation", because clearly they don't have the mental fortitude that Nadal and Fed have.
I wonder what happens 5 years from now. I think after Fed and Nadal are done, there'll be a transition period with random unranked players suddenly taking a slam, or a young "up and comer" taking a slam then falling off the face of the earth (someone like Thiem). The bar is just so incredibly high.

That one year stretch from Djokovic saw him playing at a level higher than any point in Nadal's career, though still not up to 05/06 Federer. He had a bright but brief peak. I agree that they're 1-2, but Nadal is such a single surface specialist that even if he catches Federer in majors there's still no contest between them overall, in my view. Playing in literally any other era Federer would be sitting on 22ish, imo.

Auger-Aliassime won first round in Lyon. A good challenger win.

that's pretty harsh on Nole and Andy, who own 15 slams between them but were probably denied at least 10 more because they're in the same era as the two goats. the game of "if this guy didn't exist then..." could be endlessly applied and just gets us nowhere though. Fed wrecked the slam counts of every player from his generation (Hewitt, Roddick, Safin, etc.), but Fed in turn had 5 (!) French wins taken away by raging bullface. I just think you can't be too disappointed in any player from the last 15 years, because the mountains have been basically unscalable for that long.
as for the future, take comfort that we will all bear witness to Felix the Great. no pressure on the kid or anything.

lol - The future of Canadian tennis looks to be in pretty good hands, of course sometimes the transition from junior phenom to the ATP/WTA tour can be difficult (guys like Jimmy Arias and more recently Filip Peliwo come to mind), but you can't help but get excited about the potential of Denis Shapavolov and Felix on the men's side and Bianca Andreescu on the women's side.

In other news, Pospisil not only qualified for but is through to the second round in the Netherlands 250 event. He next has a very winnable match against Bagdahtis. His rise back up the rankings continues.
