Maloney named vice president of hockey ops. Conroy and Pascal have been re-signed
https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/malo...ns/c-290581554
Quote:
The Calgary Flames General Manager Brad Treliving made the following announcement with regards to the hockey department; Don Maloney was named Vice President of Hockey Operations. Maloney will continue to report directly to General Manager Brad Treliving.
Maloney originally joined the Flames in 2016 as a Pro Scout following nine seasons as Executive Vice President, General Manager and Alternate Governor of the Arizona Coyotes. Prior to joining the Coyotes in 2007, he spent the previous 10 seasons as a member of the New York Rangers' front office, most recently serving as the team's Vice President of Player Personnel and Assistant General Manager.
Additionally, the Flames have re-signed Assistant General Managers Craig Conroy and Brad Pascall. Conroy is entering his fourth season in his current role after serving four seasons as a Special Assistant to the General Manager. This will be Brad Pascall's third season as the Flames Assistant General Manager and the General Manager of the Flames AHL affiliate Stockton Heat.
The Flames also announced Derek MacKinnon as the Director of Pro Personnel; Rob Sumner and Fred Parker as Assistant Directors of Amateur Scouting working under Director of Amateur Scouting Tod Button; and Chris Snow changing titles to Director of Hockey Analysis.

In the words of Sting - Maloney's student has become his master!
Nice to see him a more integrated part of the Flames brain trust.

Thought for sure that Maloney would only be with the Flames briefly until he found another GM role. Pleasantly surprised by this.

I have to admit I don't understand what Maloney's role is here. Burke is president of hockey operations, so does this make him essentially a step below Burke?

Kind of confused.. Don Maloney is Vice Pres of Hockey Operations yet reports to the General Manger, not the President of Hockey Operations.
Burkie out soon?

So wait a second. If Burke is President of hockey ops, and Maloney is vp, are they both under GM Trelving? I'm not certain how this ranking system works. Because in my mind Trelving answers to Burke and Maloney under a traditional system.

Think of him as a trusted advisor and successor to Burke for when he eventually departs. Burke is a go between for Treliving and ownership/King.

I bet the organization respects his opinion and wants to keep him around to advise on hockey personnel. I'd guess it's not a strict hierarchy but more of a collaboration. Of course, Burke could overrule him if he thought it was important. But Burke probably wouldn't hire someone in a senior role that he constantly had to overrule.

I get the need for lots of oversight and knowledge in the front office, but one can't help but think it's getting awfully crowded in there.

Maybe King is finally on his way out?
Burke is promoted to King's position, and Tre adds Pres of Hockey Ops to his title?

Treliving is being groomed to replace Burke.
Conroy is being groomed to replace Treliving.
Pascal's next job/promotion will likely be as Conroy's A-GM or a job outside of the Flames organization.
I expect Burke to eventually leave the Flames organization and Maloney to remain the in the VP of Hockey Ops position.
And the guy that most want replaced - Ken King - will remain throughout everything.

Remember back in the day when it was just a GM and Coach? Sometimes they were even the same guy. Good times...

Title is kind of confusing but intentional, IMO.
Sounds like they wanted to give Maloney an assistant GM role, but recognize that he has more experience and standing than Conroy and Pascal. Thus, title was created.

If true, good to see vertical hierarchy alive and well on the hockey ops side of things.

There's also the distinct possibility that Burke wants to retire in a few years. Not every move has an underhanded purpose.
