Default Willie Desjardins named coach of Team Canada for 2018 Olympics

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/wi...ment-1.4220399

Quote:
Former Vancouver Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins will lead a group of non-NHL players at the Pyeongchang Olympics next February in South Korea.

Longtime Canadian coach Dave King and ex-NHL forwards Scott Walker and Craig Woodcroft were named assistants at the Hockey Canada Hall of Champions on Tuesday.

Former NHL goaltenders Sean Burke and Martin Brodeur form Canada's management team, joining Hockey Canada CEO Tom Renney, president and COO of Hockey Canada Scott Smith and Scott Salmond, vice-president of hockey operations and national men's teams.

Hiring Willie makes a lot of sense here as he has plenty of experience coaching non-NHL caliber players.

So Willie's rise to fame starts with getting this gig after being let by Vancouver.

Alain Vigneault, John Tortorella, Glen Gulutzan...Willie will be the hottest free agent coach available after he leads Canada to a Gold with buncha no namers...

You forgot Mike Sullivan.

Fun fact:

Following his first year behind the Flames bench Glen Gulutzan recorded his ninth straight winning season as a professional head coach, and his tenth out of eleven seasons comprising six years in the ECHL (0.587 WP), two years in the AHL (0.544), and three in the NHL (0.514).

Should have gotten Tippett. If anyone can eek maximum results out of a minimal roster it's him.

Team Canada should just bring the Under 20 team to the Olympics, it'll garner more interest and probably fare better too.

Actually, the whole Olympic hockey tourney should just replace the WJCs every 4 years. The Olympics are suppose to be for amateur athletes anyways.

Plus can you imagine the thrill it would be for these kids to win Olympic gold?

They could bring 2 or 3 of the best Under 20 Canadian players, but Canada would get slaughtered if they brought only the Under 20's and other teams brought older guys.

Just eking in to the medal round is not the goal

Yeah that is ugly - I feel like there have to be some guys in Junior still that could potentially be better options.

To be honest, I'd be happy to cheer for a Canadian roster of any of these guys. I bet it's a lot more fun to play in such a high profile event without the pressure of being the best and being expected to win. Go Team Canada!
