Even as a kid watching the 80s BOA, it was hard not to like this guy, even if he played for the 'bad guys'. RIP, Semenko. One of the good ones, for sure.

Sad .... he was Wayne's body gaurd .... I remember a section of glass falling out during the play in the corner at the Saddledome and Semenko grabbing it before it fell onto the fans and thinking it was noble .... it might have been the first game in the new rink , so long ago I can't remember if it was or not ... RIP Dave ..

I remember my dad while we watched HNiC calling him "Cement Head" in the early 80's and I thought it was funny.
Then in the first outdoor classic alumni game, he was one of the better players as I recall, he had kept himself in good shape and played better than some of the more revered ex-oilers.
RIP.

RIP Dave, you did an excellent job making me hate you which, as an Oiler, means you did it well.
Hated him as a player but never had an issue with him as a person. Nobody deserves cancer.

He was the bogeyman when I was a kid. Larger than life and scary as all heck.
Terrible news. RIP

I went to a hockey school in Peace River when I was in Pee Wee and he and Dave Hunter (I think) were the ones running it. Our parents hung out with them and by all accounts he was an awesome guy.
Sorry to hear he passed.

Good old cement head. Hating him and the Oilers during the 80's is a great memory, even though it often brought great disappointment.
The guy played hockey in the greatest league in the world. Congratulations on a fantastic life and being part of so many people's memories.

I met Semenko at Banditos on 11 ave in Calgary during the battle of Alberta hey days.
Saw a picture of him on the internet with George Larouque and he looked very ill.

Probably the all-time iconic picture of the BoA.
Not only was he scary, but apparently had quite the sense of humour too. Can't remember exactly where I heard this (Dick Irvin I think?), but I guess Semenko's go-to line to ask someone to fight off the draw was "Hey...wanna go for a canoe ride?" I always got a kick out of that, RIP

Love him or hate him as a player, he knew his role, and was fitting Gretzky was protected by one of the 'Gretzky's' of enforcers. Besides Probert and Schultz, you can't really name too many guys that were as straight up scary.
Met him also about a decade back at a golf tourney, and he was a hell of a nice guy. Also had a lot of respect for Tim Hunter as an adversary which he made a point of pointing out on his own, when I mentioned I was a Flames fan.
RIP.

I got that photo and another one of the two of them in my office.
I read his autobiography as well. It made me laugh a few times. He has a story in there of a game where he got 3 assists or something in the third period due to Kurri and Gretzky.
RIP Semenko.

Man, he was one of the hallmarks of the nuclear arsenal for the Battle of Alberta! Tragic loss, but the legacy lives on!
