They need to do a deal.
Getzlaf, Perry, Kesler, Vermette, Silfverberg, Rackell, Cogliano
Lindholm, Fowler, Manson
Gibson

Vatanen traded
Bieksa waives or is bought out (injury might muddy this option though)

That's what I see happening.

You can't really trade Vatanen though, because then you'll just be exposing whatever you get back from trading him if you follow the rest of your protected list.

There's really no way around having to protect him. They have to go the 8-player + 1 goalie route, and try to get Bieksa to waive.

What's to stop them from trading Vatanen for something they don't have to protect, like picks or prospects?

Like Vatanen to the Stars for 29th overall?

...Then the Stars would have to expose Honka, who is basically a younger Vatanen.

That's a fair point, though I'm not sure losing Vatanen from your line-up is worth a draft pick + protecting one of Silfverberg/Vermette/Cogliano.

That would be kind of like us trading Brodie for a draft pick and then protecting Ferland.

They've got Dmen coming out of their ears though.

Montour is a Vatanen clone and ready to go.

Anyways, I hope I'm wrong. I'd love Anaheim to screwed over here.

Leaving Silfverberg as the consensus pick.
I would keep Silvferberg over Vatanen. But I'm not sure Bieksa can be moved because he's injured.

It must suck to be a team like the Ducks that has so many good players they can't keep them all...

I forgot Vatanen is also LTIR. Rackell has a high ankle sprain too. Now, those things wouldn't necessarily keep Vegas from claiming either but it makes a trade of Vatanen pretty hard.

Because of his injury, Bieksa might waive his NMC, and feel fairly confident he won't get picked.

Brouwer has negative value... Makes more sense to take an asset another team wants and flip it for a pick.

I am expecting Hathaway to get taken, outside chance shinkaruk or Kulak. For me Hathaway was more impactful than Kulak in limited showings and would have been up all season if not for expensive contracts.

Here is the Flames expansion lists from CapFriendly

Check marked is who I think will be protected.

UFA's can't be selected in the draft, but Vegas can try to sign any of them during their exclusive window, but can only sign one during the window. If they do sign one that counts as their selection from us.

I don't think the flames will have to worry about protection, I think the Knights will sign Engelland. He's a really useful player, he is a servicable 6 defenseman and doubles as an enforcer saving you from having to dress a plug.

Local guy too with roots in the community. He will be marketable to the fan base too, fans love tough guys.

I mean id rather have him than Brouwer or Kulak or Shinkaruk.

I thought I read that Shinkaruk needs waivers next season, so if Vegas selects him they either need to be confident he'll make the team or risk losing him to another team. In this case, why would they lean towards selecting him?

Looking at it from a Flames bubble, Engelland is probably the best option but keep in mind, that defense will be a position of strength for Vegas because teams can only protect 3 of them.

TSN has put out their own Golden Knights draft simulator. From the Calgary Flames, you can select, in goal......Karri Ramo!

Playing with that now gives me doubts the Flames will lose Brouwer. I put a team together that was completely over the cap and had to switch Brouwer to Shinkaruk and Cammalleri to Bennett to get compliant. Vegas will want to leave capnsoace for trades and feee agency so I see them taking a lot of low salary assets

there are some tough calls
For Detroit, would you take Helm or Abdelkader?
For the Wild, do you take Zucker or Spurgeon?
Rangers, Lindberg, Fast, even Stepan if you can handle the big contract

then there is Edmonton ...

Tried to see what would happen if Vegas was a cap team. Here's how I did, spending as close to the cap as possible. I think this team would be ok.

Mike Cammalleri - Derek Stepan - David Perron
Jason Chimera - Calle Jarnkrok - Lee Stempniak
Sven Andrighetto - Boone Jenner - Troy Brouwer
Dale Weise - Nic Dowd - Tom Kuhnhackl
Extras: Iiro Pakarainen, Ben Smith, Reid Boucher, Joel Armia

Sami Vatanen - Jared Spurgeon
Dan Hamhuis - Paul Martin
Kevan Miller - Braydon Coburn
Chris Wideman
Extras: Luke Schenn, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Nathan Beaulieu, Ryan Sproul

Roberto Luongo
Philipp Grubauer
Anders Nilsson

I think that could be a playoff team.
