Default Drunk Sunwing Airlines pilot passes out in cockpit with 100 passengers on board

In Calgary this morning. While still on the ground thankfully.

Quote:
Calgary police have charged a pilot after he passed out from intoxication in the cockpit of a plane full of passengers and crew.

According to police, the pilot boarded a Sunwing Airlines plane destined for Cancun, Mexico shortly before 7 a.m. on Dec. 31.

Crews at the gate and on the plane noticed the pilot was" behaving oddly, before he became unconscious in the cockpit," according to a media release. He was then taken into police custody.
Quote:
He has been charged with having care and control of an aircraft while impaired, and having care and control of an aircraft with a blood alcohol level over .08.

The flight had 99 passengers and six crew members on board, including the pilot.

Do all planes need to have 2 pilots? Or does sunwing only need one?

What a moron. This guy should never be allowed in a cockpit again.

The fact that "care and control over .08" is a thing for aircraft and not "care and control over .00" is rather unbelievable.

I think there need to be two for every flight. Some have three.

Especially considering its 'work.'

You're going to work.

Two crew in the cockpit, longer flights would have a relief pilot so they can rotate off to rest.

Hopefully this guy's work visa is yanked after this.

I'm sure Sunwing is already filing the papers to terminate him with cause for that.

Well, that answers my question as to why he was drunk in the morning.

Makes sense, they have a sister company based in Eastern Europe and they exchange pilots all the time. My brother in law is a senior pilot for them and is based out of Poland during Sunwing's off season

People who drink heavily the night before are sometimes still drunk in the morning.

It appears to be both. So not really unbelievable after all.

Another article said pilots can't have anything to drink within 8 hours of flying.

Being above .08 is probably just another level up from that.

Nailed it. That's why he got arrested and not just fined.

In related news: Two Indonesian airline executives resign after footage shows pilot staggering to plane (and the pilot was fired)

Quote:
Incredibly, captain Tekad Purna was allowed to board the plane but passengers rioted when they heard him over the PA.

Mobile phone footage filmed by a passenger captured the chaos in the cockpit.

Some of the passengers left the plane when it appeared that the pilot was going to be allowed to fly. He was eventually replaced with another pilot.

Pretty scary. I'd bet a number of pilots aren't flying a plane 100% dry for the previous 8 hours too and this is a fairly common and underreported occurrence.
