Also, I take most people's "feel" of the controller D-Pad and buttons with a grain of salt. Most of us are used to playing on well worn-in controllers, and the new controller might actually be closer to a new SNES controller than what you have in your house.

Anyone ever try the modded Wii route? I'm kicking around the idea and won't shy away from any feedback.

As long as you're not concerned about how it will look on an HDTV. Max output for a Wii is 480p.

If you use component cables and not composite it looks really good on an HDTV, even at 480p its up scaled

Anyone find any pre-orders yet? Would be a nice Canada Day present.
Oh and, hi Photon!

I have a Wii currently I'm getting back into playing, so it wouldn't be much of a change for me on that front. I was more so looking for the expanded library of games. I'm okay with the poor graphics in that sense, so it might be a good route to explore.

Is that the one that comes stock with the Wii, or is it an after-the-fact addition?

I think you have to buy it separately. If you have 3 connectors, it's composite, if you have 5, it's component. And well worth the upgrade.

As long as your TV's upscaling doesn't introduce too much lag, then yeah it's a decent option. When I turned off all the laggy scaling options it obviously looked pretty meh.
This is more important if you're playing games that require more finess, like NES or SNES games. Playing RPGs? Well, no worries there.

Is it weird that I'm not that excited about the SNES mini because I don't expect to be able to buy one without bending over backwards? The whole NES mini shortage thing really soured me on my excitement for an otherwise neat product line coming from Nintendo. Too bad. Guess we'll see what Nintendo decides to do, but I'm not holding my breath.

Not weird at all. It's not worth the hassle for me when I can already play those games using an emulator. If there was a simple pre-order I might snag one up.

Last year I lined up at around 5:30 in front of a Walmart for the NES Mini launch and snagged one (there were only 12 units available for that store). I am thinking about doing the same this time around...

I have to guess this time around it'll be far worse. The NES Classic wasn't widely advertised and nobody knew there'd be a time (within months) that you couldn't get it again. Every scalper in the world is going to be lining up for these I'd imagine.

I wasn't that interested in the NES classic because I still have my old NES.
But I have never owned a SNES. All I have is nostalgic feeling for going over to a friend's house and playing Super Mario Kart or Super Mario World. While I can (and have) easily run these games on an emulator, I understand the appeal of having a simple standalone box with the 'original' controllers.
So I am caught up in the hype, and jump into this thread every time someone bumps it. Unfortunately, all the bumps are just comments, and no news on preorder availability...heh.
