Happy 117th birthday Misao Okawa!
Living in Japan since 2012, perhaps I will get some extra years near the end for having drank the water and eaten the white rice over here
Japanese woman, world’s oldest person, gets ready to celebrate 117th birthday:

I think people will be living that long on average before I die.
Think about the exponential development of technology she's seen in her lifetime and now think about what we'll see.
(lol k, I should specify "before I die" if I live a full life. At my pace, I'll be lucky to see the next iPhone)

I genuinely lol'd at that one, thanks for that!
And I totally agree. Humans are living far longer than even 100 yrs ago, no reason to think that trend wont continue.

IIRC Okinawa has about 500 people over the age of 100 and is known as the healthiest place on earth.

My grandmother is 104 and still going, albeit in a very diminished state.
I thought she was really old...just a spring chicken in comparison to this woman!

The only trade off to Japan having lots of healthy old people is the fact they are growing in great number. Not enough babies born recently (despite my valiant efforts and Japan is not an immigration country so there will be a large portion of the population needing support from the government/not contributing in taxation on income.
Oh well, life goes on... I would rather support now and eventually be a part of an aging healthy population rather than be on the other side of the spectrum.

Sad. She passed away today.

The world's oldest person has died a few weeks after celebrating her 117th birthday - after saying her life seemed 'rather short'.
Misao Okawa was surrounded by her family and staff at her nursing home in Osaka, Japan, as she died of heart failure on April 1.
Born on March 5, 1898, the great-grandmother had lived through two World Wars, the invention of the television and the first successful powered aeroplane flight by the Wright Brothers.

Hints To Longevity Found In Blood Of 115-Year-Old Woman
http://www.popsci.com/article/scienc...year-old-woman
Wanting to know the secrets of her longevity, scientists have examined her blood and other tissues, and found some interesting things. For one, they found that about two-thirds of her white blood cells had been made by only two stem cells, as reported by New Scientist. (Stem cells create white blood cells, which are responsible for fighting off infection, and other functions.) Typically, about 1,000 stem cells actively make these blood cells. That finding implies that, predictably, stem cells die out throughout the years, and that there is indeed a limit to human life. But it also means that it may be possible to save stem cells from one's birth or youth, keep them alive outside the body, and re-inject them years later, to lengthen life.
In one of the studies to come out of this research, published this week in the journal Genome Research, the scientists found a number of mutations in van Andel-Schipper's white blood cells, but found that all of them were harmless. This means she likely had "a superior system for repairing or aborting cells with dangerous mutations," although it's not clear exactly what that might have been.
