Still glad they drafted Bennett just wish he would have been up front with the Flames about the shoulder.

I'm pretty sure they knew about the shoulder. But like many shoulder issues, it ended up being worse then they at first thought.
Like some have mentioned on here, shoulders are tricky. One day you wake up and you have no pain, everything seems normal again. Then you get bumped, or sleep on it wrong, tweak it some way, and the pain comes back... sometimes worse then other times.
I'm sure Bennett and the Flames thought he was fine, he got pulled out of the lineup for rest to see if the discomfort would subside, it didn't... they did more testing and found out what they did... #### happens

I saw quotes from Doug Gilmour in the Kingston paper before Flames camp about the shoulder issues last season. The Flames must have known and I suspect the Drs. would have checked it out .

You would think that was the case right. I agree. It seems the Flames are just trying to cover up a bit that they knowingly drafted a player with the 4th overall pick that requires a 6 month shoulder surgery. They knew that once he is healthy he will be a major part of the Flames offence for years to come.
Just trying to save a bit of face with the fans and media that might criticize the decision I bet.
Sam was worth the pick regardless.

Bennett had shoulder surgery today. Went well. Great prospect. My best guess is he goes to junior but will be out 4 to 6 months. #thnlive

I know he would not normally be eligible for the AHL, but was hoping this might be a loop hole we could exploit to get him a few more higher level games.
|
As noted, the Flames could do that. But it would be foolish. He's going to be nowhere near game shape when he's healthy enough to play, and it will be far easier for him to get back into the flow of things against junior players than he will pros. The better scenario is that he goes back to Kingston once healthy, and if eliminated from the playoffs there, could then go to Adirondack on an ATO for their own playoff run with some games already under his belt.

The one caveat to that would be that, with a conditioning stint in Addy, their own doctors and training staff would still be in control and they could continue to manage the process and ensure that things are taken slowly.
Having said that, I still think you're likely right.

If the shoulder heals 100% (which seems likely), the Flames are going to get the player that Bennett should have been in his draft year. Depending on his development from here on in, he could put the rest of his draft class in the shade.

When you put it that way, I completely agree Very happy the Flames drafted him.

Assuming he stays up until medically cleared to play, there are many benefits. First he draws an NHL paycheck, and the Flames have more cushion (albeit small) from the cap floor, in case they are trading salary at the deadline.
It's also good that he is under the care of Flames doctors. I also would not like to see him under billet care or inconsistent care during rehab. It's in the Flames and Bennett's best interests to ensure rehab is done right. It will also get Bennett into an NHL wourkout routine.

Two top prospects with shoulder surgeries, Poirier being the other one. That's rough. As long as they arrive at training camp in tip-top shape, I'm ok with this...

- bennett is progressing "good"
- some players you have to kick in the rear end to get them going - if you ask sam he would probably say he could go tonight
- he is getting full days in - nutrition, strength training and rehab

What does he do while he's recovering? Ride exercise bikes and stuff?

One thing he has to learn is to avoid impingement. The shoulder is incredibly easy to injure because it's so easy to cause an impingement injury, easier than most people can imagine. Shoulder presses, upright rows, bench press or even pushups can injure the shoulders. Hopefully there is a good doctor working with him that teaches him how easy it is to cause damage to the shoulder. Most shoulder injuries are impingement related and if there is a trauma impingement usually exacerbates it to the point of requiring surgery.

... and probably have to lock away the skates and sticks so he doesn't run out and mess up his recovery.
Probably mostly cardio and lower body is my guess.
