No doubt the flames have a tough schedule now. The way they're playing though I'm not really that worried. If they beat LA once or twice that should pretty much lock in a spot anyways.

The Canucks and Stars are done and won't be listed anymore.

Make no mistake the Jets can come off that list too. If they win out they end up with 91 points. They have the worst goaltending in the league. They're finished.

The Flames scoring depth is something to behold this season. They have 12 players with more than ten goals so far this season. 10 of those players are forwards. That means that the Flames can rotate 3 lines which are offensive threats. This makes me feel pretty positive about some quality playoff competition coming from this team.

What are the odds on a Battle of Alberta opening round? Would both the Flames and Oilers have to leapfrog the Ducks?

The chances are slim and both teams don't have to pass the Ducks. The Oilers stay in the position they are in and the Flames win the division or the Oilers win the div and the Flames fall to where the Oilers are, the BOA would happen.

Here's the chances of potential first round matchups for the Flames according to Sports Club Stats:

Ducks: 36.5%
Sharks: 27.1%
Oilers: 27.0%
Blackhawks: 6.9%
Wild: 0.6%
Predators: 0.5%
Blues: 0.4%
Kings: 0.2%

"Chance will play in first round: The numbers are rounded percentages, so a 0 means a very small number that rounded to 0. If there is a blank space for an opponent we never meet them after any of the millions of simulated seasons, although it still might be mathematically possible. Bye means we get to skip the first round and jump straight to the second."

What a ridiculous stretch it has been. A combination of 12 points gained by the Flames and points not gained by LA will put this is the bag. Realistically, after last nights game, we are no longer a viable target for them. Even if we went 5-5 in our remaining games they would need to go 10-0-1 to tie us. Even then, every one of their wins would need to be in regulation to have a chance of getting the ROW advantage.

By time the weekend rolls around the teams below LA should be mathematically finished (in terms of catching us). I think if we haven't done so, March 29th looks like it could be the game that potentially clinches things.

Sun feels a little brighter this morning.

This may sound odd, but this is the match-up I want. It's so past time to get this Honda Centre monkey off the Flames' back (bonus in avenging 2015 and 2006).

As I said at the end of the 2015 second round, the Flames' road to the Conference Finals likely travels through Anaheim at some point. Let's just get it on and hopefully they can do it.

I'd like a BOA too, but the second round or future seasons can accommodate that.

EDIT: Not to jinx anything. They still have to make it. 7 more points probably does it.

Still possible for a BOA in round 1,2 or 3 since brackets are now a thing.
Round 1: 2nd and 3rd seed
Round 2: one is 2nd or 3rd, and one 7th/8th seed, but plays Pacific division regular season winner (both teams win 1st round series).
Round 3: both make playoffs, at least one is wild card that draws central champ in round 1. Because of bracketing, teams stay within bracket for second round. Both teams win first 2 rounds.

To me, the Ducks are our "Bad Boy Pistons" and defeating them has that kind of timeless meaning.. that we've taken the next step forward. I want them, and no one else.

Kings are down to a < 10% chance of making playoffs now after last night.

Honestly, right now the only team I wouldn't want to face is the Blackhawks in the first round. Any other team, I think the Flames can go toe to toe with. So whether it be the Sharks, Ducks, or Oilers, I say bring it on!

And they are even less likely to catch us as we are 4 points ahead of both the Preds and Blues which right now are tied for 2nd wild card which is who the < 10% would be referring to.

Does anyone else agree that the Flames need to wear their retros at home for the playoffs?

Out of thanks but agree completely. Beating the Ducks in the playoffs will signify another stage of evolution for this team. And before then, beating them at the Honda Center will feel pretty good too.

Considering that for the 9 teams in playoff contention, you have one in Calgary who have 18 points in their last 10 games. You have the Wild who are the outlier the other way with 4. The other 7 all have 11 to 16.

I would anticipate that over the next 10, the 8 teams who ultimately make the playoffs will fall in the 11-16 range, and anyone who falls below it will be one of the teams who are already comfortably in like Minnesota, San Jose, or Chicago.

So realistically there isn't much room for any one team to move one way or the other. Any gap larger of 3 or more points most likely stays to the end of the season.

Can you imagine the momentum the Flames would have going into the second round and beyond if they were able to take of Anaheim in the first round? Their confidence level would be off the charts.
