Best Picture Oscar this year
I did a thread search and couldn't find anything, so I thought I would make a list of my favorite films of 2009/what I think will be (should be) up for Best Picture in a few weeks. Here were my 5 favorite films, followed by the 5 that I think will receive an oscar nom.
1: The Hurt Locker
Awesome Iraq war film that gives the war genre a much needed facelift. Should win Best Picture, but it won't.
2: Moon
Independent Sci Fi film that is a must see. So good I watched it twice when I first saw it.
3: Inglorious Basterds
What more can you say? Tarantino's best since Pulp Fiction?
4: Up in the Air
Jason Reitman is awesome
5: Avatar
shoe in for Best picture? Visually stunning. Everyone but the Pope has seen it.
Honorable Mentions:
Precious (No, not the Gollum kind)
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
My guess on the five films that will be nominated for best picture:
Avatar
Up in the Air
Inglorious Basterds
The Hurt Locker
Precious
All IMO. Anyone else?

yikes, give me a break.
The Hurt Locker SUCKED
It was released in 2008 and nobody had it being so great. It's just an "Iraq movie without politics"
The movie itself was no better than the mini series on Showcase. It's trash.
If the "Hurt Locker" wins a nomination - then "Enemy at the Gates" better win for best movie "EVER"

I hope Avatar doesn't win. Visually magnificent but that alone shouldn't be what Best Picture is about. Avatar was basically a sci-fi remake of Dances With Wolves, only without the characterisation, more predictable and with clunky dialogue. Don't get me wrong, it was worth the money to see the visuals but surely there are better movies from this year.
One thing's for sure, after Avatar and District 9 I have never felt so much sympathy for aliens. We really should treat them better.

500 Days of Summer. Best 2009 film I've seen, and by quite a margin.
Agree with Icarus about Avatar. It should win some technical Oscars, but please not for best picture.

Avatar had some really, really kid movie cheesey type stuff in it. Like you said, the visuals were worth it, but I wouldn't even watch it again out of theater. Unlike Inglorious Basterds..
The acting was also just terrible in certain parts and overall the writing was very bad. I love how everyone is praising that I see you crap, like it is something original from this movie and hasn't been around for thousands of years in First Nations culture.

Hmmm, it wasn't a bad movie. Not a particularly good 'romantic' movie as it is advertised considering the way it ends (i.e. don't take your date to it). But I would happily watch it again (99% thanks to Zooey Deschanel! )

Funny, Zooey is the reason I won't watch that movie. I can't stand that woman's voice, it manages to be whiny and manly at the same time. 2 hours of listening to that? No thanks!

My Predictions for 2009 BP (nominations):
* District 9
Avatar
The Hurt Locker
Inglorious Basterds
Precious
Up in the Air
Invictus
Nine
An Education
The Blind Side
A Single Man
* District 9 was the "Best Motion Picture" (IMHO) of 2009. I have a feeling it will not even receive a Nomination.
FTR: 10 Nominations for BP is just foolish IMHO.
Movies that should not be Nominated:
Avatar
Inglorious Basterds
Up in the Air
The Blind Side
Invictus
Nine

The Road should win Best Picture, imo. If not, Viggo deserves Best Actor for it for sure.
Let's wait for the noms though. Avatar will most likely win.

The category that has the most interest for me this year is actually the animated category. Between Up, Coraline, Fantastic Mr Fox, and Ponyo, this could be one of the best years ever for animated films. I think Ponyo and possibly one of Coraline or FMF don't get a nomination, though.
I'm on board with Methanolic for District 9 being the best movie I've seen this year, although there are still a few likely nominees that I haven't seen.
It's fascinating how much of an opposite it is from Avatar: the ugly, historically tainted location of a Johannesburg slum compared with a beautiful and pristine planet; hideous, mostly listless and unadmirable, cockroach-like aliens compared with the beautiful, noble and brave Na'vi; and the snivelling, bureaucratic Wikus compared with the heroic and pure-hearted Jake Sully. Avatar packed in everything that you want to see in a sci-fi film, while District 9 made itself as unlikeable as possible, which for me made it all the more remarkable that at the end of District 9 I cared far more about the outcome than I ever did in Avatar. That said, I fully expect that Avatar will win best picture and District 9 won't get a nomination.
