What kind of player is he? With all the injuries is available for call up as a plugger?

None of the injuries are to pluggers
Regardless, he needs more time in the A

Is he just a third line grinder defensive winger?

Unless he takes a major step up with his skating, yes

Yes his realistic NHL upside is 3rd line winger.
Most likely going to be a crash and bang winger with little to no offense.

At best I think 4th liner, crash, bang, odd fight, pump the guys up type. I would want more offensive upside from a 3rd liner, just don't think he will be capable of it at the next level.

I wonder when NHL Gm's will learn that "the best player not in the nhl" is never good when he comes to the nhl.

This isn't always true. Some of them have turned out great. It's well worth the risk, IMO.

You never know who's going to pan out. Our current captain, while in a slightly different situation, was acquired from outside the normal avenue as well. For every Fabian Brunnstrom, you get a Mats Zuccarello, for every Gustafsson you get a Hiller.
If you have the spots available (and we do) why not try it. If it works, it's found money.

I'm not sure what's wrong with Gustafsson, he's actually a pretty capable backup. I know even of a few teams he'd probably start for *cough Edmonton cough*.
