It'll be great to see who this year's Dubois will be.
Button's mock draft in early January had us taking Dubois @ 9th, and while some were good with that pick:

If the Flames get this guy at 9, it's a steal. Could see him sneaking up the rankings as we get closer to the draft though.

Impressive. Sounds like the kid is a work horse, and is completely focused on becoming the best he can. If the skill is there this could be a great pick.
Some others were less than enthused:

That would be the worst.

Indeed. One Dmitry Sokolov was projected to go top 10, and I had to look him up to even know who he was. Went in the 7th round.

Let me know if that works if you're not still using your iPad for frisbee golf : )

I guess I'll follow this draft. Is this one projected to be a weaker one?

Apparently the draft is a little bit below average.

I've read articles saying that Nolan Patrick is the weakest first overall pick since Ekblad. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see Patrick become better than Matthews.

Looks like a smaller/more skilled high end to me. I don't think that necessarily means worse. In the later rounds, I think the draft is average.

Is that supposed to be a negative?

Haha yes. But I know, saying he's worse than McDavid and Matthews is not saying a lot. If anything.

Patrick might be the best player to come out of the WHL since...I don't even know.

NHL central scouting has released it's future watch list. The list is essentially players who stood out in the 2015-2016 season and are in early consideration for being ranked for the 2017 draft.

Article which highlights potential 1st round picks:

A list to compare it to, or add a little context to:

We've had our 2017 Preliminary ranking out since prior to the 2016 NHL Draft.

Also, we've got 30 full scouting profiles up on our top-ranked guys:

^NHL Central Scouting's approach is curious.
They provide good overview of prospects to monitor. Be nice if they ever decide to eliminate the 4 separate lists in their rankings...

Why does the NHL keep their lists separate? Is there some sort of reason?

I would assume due to operating costs. The way you integrate regional lists with each other is to have some of your scouts cross over and scout other regions. Getting your Euro scouts to see enough of NA or getting your NA scouts to see enough of the Euros is very expensive because you're talking a lot of cross continent flights. CSS probably doesn't have enough of a budget to do these cross continent crossovers.

I believe they keep their North American and European lists separate because their NA scouts don't really go watch the Euro players and their Euro scouts don't really go watch the NA players.

It is pretty difficult to generate a unified ranking when there is little crossover between the scouts to watch players in the other regions.

As for goalies, I believe a lot of NHL teams don't include goalies in their skater rankings. The Flames don't for sure.

For the curious, next weekend the first major Hockey Canada camp of the 2017 draft season kicks off as they figure out the team for the Ivan Hlinka tournament. Goes down at Winsport.

Won't be draft eligible for 3 more years, but Scotty Bowman is pumping the tires of Luke Toporowski a 15 year old LW that was drafted and signed by the Spokane Chiefs. Son of minor leaguer goon Larry Toporowski.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2...mob-art-mid-17

Quote:
Scotty Bowman remains one of the biggest rink rats out there. At 82 years young, the legendary former NHL coach was right there with all the other coffee-swilling amateur scouts in Buffalo recently, looking at prospects at a U.S. National Development Team camp.

A man once almost as famous for his sparse praise for players as his many Stanley Cups, Bowman came away raving about a 5'10", 163-pound 15-year-old from the hockey hotbed of...Bettendorf, Iowa.

Luke Toporowski is the name, and if it isn't recognizable now, just wait until he becomes eligible for the NHL draft in about three years. It's a name that Bowman, a 14-time Stanley Cup-winner, had no trouble remembering after watching him skate.

"He's one of the best prospects I've ever seen," Bowman said. "He's got a terrific stride, skates like [Sidney] Crosby. Hard to knock off his feet, just cutting around the defense and accelerating."

In May, the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League selected Toporowski with the eighth pick in the first round of the bantam draft, which marked the first time since 2009 that an American-born player went in the first round.
If Bowman is being truthful about his assessment, then Toporowski could be the next so-called "generational" players that seem to pop up every couple of years.

I feel that if Toporowski is the next big thing, we'd have heard about him by now. 15 seems really late to be the first time someone's heard of him, he didn't even go first OA in the Bantam draft.

Either way, I look forward to the Oilers finishing last and picking him #1 OA in the 2019 draft.

I heard he led his league in goals/points prior to the draft. Why was he only taken with the 8th pick of the bantam draft? Size?

Pretty gutsy for Bowman to say such kind words for a guy like that. But that's a pretty cool endorsement for Toporowski. It's also pretty cool how he's from Iowa.
