one of the picks is conditional:
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
I think on the details still being worked out is a condition on one of the picks, option for year of pick...

I don't see how the Flames can give 2 2nd round picks. They can't trade next year's second. So the picks would have to go to 2020.

Seeing what Nashville did with the D this year I am ok with this trade. There in a window to win and Hamonic is only 26 years old.

I think this is a good deal
The one issue it seems to create now though is I don't think there is the draft capital if the flames want to upgrade at the deadline or through trade without using an NHL player, because of what's been paid in 1sts and 2nds the last few years
It's a win by value so you always take that
However that means that barring a core player being moved this is the team for the next 2-3 years

Not a big fan of this. That's a steep price to pay for a # 4 defencemen. Good contract but we better hope last year was a blip due to personal issues.

Your right, I can't have an opinion. I feel like he's regressing and I prefer the picks. Crazy right? I guess I should just get in line with everyone else and say it's awesome!

We have a deep cupboard of D prospects and goalie prospects. You can easily fill these but you can't easily fill a top 4 d role

Travis Hamonic and Michael Stone for a 1st, 3 2nd's, and a 3rd. And the latter is likely now not going to be on our team.
That is a very tough future mortgaging IMO.

How deep is next years draft supposed to be? I'm hoping the first is somewhere in the 20-31 range, but just out of curiosity.

The #1 pick will be #28-31 overall. Calgary will make it to the Conference Finals.

People, picks can always be recouped. I doubt Treliving sits on his hands when it comes to picks. He covets them as much as anyone here.

People have to remember that Gio isn't exactly a young guy anymore, regardless of how much of a fitness/genetic freak he is...he's going to drop down to the 2nd pairing sooner rather than later.
Hamonic steps in to solidify this d core for another 6 years, with Brodie and Hamilton.

I love it. His cap hit is a bargain for a top 4 d man. H wants to be in the west so we have a great chance of re-signing him at a reasonable price. Top 4 is set and it's solid as hell. Calgary Flames have a dangerous team if Bennett can take the next step.

Oilers traded #16 and #33 (essentially 2 1sts) for Griffin Reinhart.
Flames trading mid-late 1st and 2 2nds for Hamonic at $3.86M is great.

With 4 top 4 D locked in until 2020-2021 for a reasonable price and a bunch of Dmen coming up through the system we should be able to re-coup a bunch of those picks.
Giordano
Hamilton
Brodie
Hamonic
Kulak
Andersson
Valimaki
Kylington
Fox
Ollas-Mattson
Wotherspoon
I bet at least 1 out our 7 D prospects become a steady top 4 guy.
With Andersson, Valimaki, Fox and Kylington I would say we have a pretty good chance at getting at least 1 top 2 guy as well. We're following the Pittsburgh path of loading up on D and trading to make a push.

Hamonic is only 26 (turns 27 in August). Given most NHL defenceman don't reach their prime until 26 or 27 - then the Flames are getting Hamonic at a great time.
And has been mentioned - he is a top-notch character guy too!
What a d-core for Anderrson, Kulak, Klyington, Fox and Valimaki to learn from!

Not to be a debbie downer, but this eerily reminds me of
Phaneuf - Regehr - Bouwmeester
Slam dunk! Stanley Cup here we come! Look how good our D are!
