Best Place to buy Unlocked Cell Phones

I'm in the market for a new cell phone and was looking at unlocked phones.
Where would be the best place to purchase one, either online or box store.

Do you have a preference on kind of phone? Different models can be obtained at different places. iPhone, Android, Blackberry? Do you want it unlocked for travel purposes? or just for use in the country? Which providers?

Basically, I'm just off contract with Bell and wanted to upgrade my phone without signing a new contract. (currently have an Iphone 4)
I'm not loyal to any phone brand in particular, I'm just not really savvy on how to transfer to a different phone without going through Bell.

I would suggest figuring out what phone you want to buy and then ask where to buy it. Are you considering used?

Bell will still be helpful in making a new phone work on their network, even it you bought it at full price from elsewhere.

I've narrowed it down to the Alcatel Idol Touch 3, Moto G, Nexus 5, maybe a OnePlus X if I can find an invite. Basically in that 300-400$ range

I would consider adding the Moto X Play to your list of phones in that price range to look at. I picked one up on Kijiji for under $400 and paid $20 to unlock it online.

I have read a few reports that say the radios in the one X are garbage in North America and to not get one if you live here. The rest are decent phones but no idea how much they cost off contract but should be close to that price point. Moto and Nexus can be purchased online, I would start there.
