Finished this monstrosity a few days ago - I'm calling it "Sushi the Hard Way", and I really don't know where the idea came from. I tried to use some photo tips I got from Sun (hope you approve). Happier with the whale than I am with the squid, but it is identifiable:

What are you talking about? That first pic looks nothing like a one eyed crab climbing a big grey dick with flat balls and a weird patch of pubes on the base.

I converted an ikea CD tower into a hat rack to display my hats, it looks pretty good I think. Way heavier than I thought though, the five brackets (four on the bottom, one on top) was almost not enough. I hope instagram pictures work here.
So I was taking a break from a different project (COMING SOON!) and ended up making this. The figures are 1/35 scale soldiers (their brothers are the central characters in the other project) and everything else is made up of spare parts and sheet styrene from my junk drawer.

My last project was a break from this one - a scene of Interstellar Archaeology. Finished off last night and made from the usual unholy mix of Celluclay, styrene, styrofoam, scrap wood and modified 1/35-scale soldiers. Throw in - literally - lots of beach sand and white glue and you've got this scene from space:

These are the two images which inspired the darn thing:

Had a pretty good day at the Western Canadian Regional Model Contest in Nanton yesterday - three bronze medals and a best-in-category award (whole story in the What Makes Me Happy thread). First time I've ever entered my work in anything, so I'm pretty happy. Here's my winners:

Shinkai 6500 Research Sub - Bronze in Ship Diorama

This is a wood lathe, made by my great grandfather on my dads side, owned for many years by my grandfather on my mom's side, and after he passed away, my dad's sister bought it at the auction that was had. That auction was 22-23 years ago, and the lathe is significantly older than I am.
I got it into my garage last weekend, and yesterday, I put the motor on, replaced a broken pulley and put a new belt on, and started fixing up the worn wiring. I need to build a stand, and actually learn how to use it safely. The thing weighs 150-200 lbs as is.
I need to find some tools as well, and I'm looking forward to playing around with it. When I ran it a little bit yesterday, I imagine it was the first time the motor has been turned on in years.

That's super cool. You do some really neat builds and you should be proud of what you put together. Congratulations on the recognition.

Does anyone have the ability to curve boards? I need some round frames made but I don't know where to begin. They need to be 1/4 inch thick by 1.5 inches in height. I'm not sure how difficult it is to bend 1/4 inch boards. I'm looking for an overall diameter between 20 and 24 inches.

I'm not totally sure what you're looking for but art framing stores do round frames. Some do their own out of raw material. Also custom stair railing companies do it.

You need to do a bent lamination or a steam bend.
What kind of wood do you want to use?
I don't think it is super difficult, just more technical.
The only bend I ever completed was with three strips of 1/4 mdf. I had to do a bunch of kerf cuts to get the mdf to bend. Then I laminated them together over my form.
I did two of these and then joined them with a butt joint to achieve the oval.
