Default Igor Larionov says the NHL style of hockey lacks creativity

Can't say I disagree

"The problem is more philosophical and starts way before players get to the NHL. It’s easier to destroy than to create. As a coach, it’s easier to tell your players to suffocate the opposing team and not turn the puck over. There are still players whose imagination and creativity capture the Soviet spirit — Johnny Gaudreau in Calgary, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews in Chicago just to name a few. However, they are becoming exceptions to the rule. Many young players who are intelligent and can see the game four moves ahead are not valued. They’re told “simple, simple, simple.”

Great article.

I'm happy that the organization is encouraging Johnny to play his creative style and supporting him even if he turns pucks over. Ie. when Burke told him he was going to send him down if he ever started dump and chasing (or whatever the exact wording was).

Johnny Hockey mention = Automatic 100% A+

He's not wrong though. It's no coincidence that Europeans are known for creativity and silky smooth hands. He's also not wrong in saying the simple game is more effective.

I bet Toews, Gaudreau, and Kane are thrilled to be inspired by the Soviet Spirit.

I've always thought of Larionov as a shutdown guy.

You can play a smart, dedicated defensive game and still be creative and imaginative with the puck.

Once again another stellar article from that site. Those video clips are cool. For all the praise the Habs get for being the most storied franchise in NHL history, I think CSKA Moscow takes the honour for all-time most dominant club in hockey history worldwide. Just an unreal number of championships and awards won by them.

No the NHL doesn't value simplicity over creativity, it values winning over creativity.

Those creative players who are good enough to play at the NHL level, play at the NHL level, and typically they are some of the highest paid stars.

Those who aren't(ala Robbie Schremp) don't make it even if they have all the fancy moves.

Larianov himself cited Toews as a creative player. Are you suggesting Toews doesn't play a strong defensive game?

Larionov himself. One of the most skilled players of his era, and also excellent without the puck. Dude didn't start playing in the NHL until he was 33 years old and he put up 644 points in the league.

Sergei Federov was once voted the most skilled player in the NHL by his peers. Won the Selke twice.

Doug Gilmour. Joe Sakic.

Pavel Datsyuk is freakishly skilled and creative with the puck, and one of the best defensive forwards in the league.

Every time I see old Makarov hilights (like in the 3rd video in the article), I can't help but see the resemblance to Gaudreau. They both have that same amazing shiftiness about them.

Fans of just about any team can think of a recent example of this. Burakovsky getting demoted off the Ovechkin line in favour of Jay Beagle is the most obvious recent one probably.
