Because he is ok in a 5-6 role. The problem in Chicago is they have a tonne of defensive depth on their NHL team and little cap space and just traded for Timonen. So Erixon was the one that became expendable.

If you do the analytics thing he is quite solid as a 5-6.

He's better than Potter and is a leftie. Even if we picked him up until Giordano returns and then waived him it would be sweet, sweet justice.

Why not? Low risk and we need depth support on D. I am not saying play him, just give him a chance to prove himself in practice.

Also, if he worked out, Flames look like saints

I would totally be down for picking him up at no cost. It gives us lots of option, more importantly then not, boosting our AHL blueline and getting them into the playoffs and getting our prospects some much needed playoff experience.

Option 1 : Pick up Erixon and demote him - help our AHL roster since he has good AHL roster, sure he has to clear waivers but whatever team picks him up, he cannot be on their NHL roster, and there is a waiver fee that someone else would have to pay to pick him up with no advantage other then to screw with Calgary. AND they would have to keep him on their roster, or he would have to go back on waivers

Option 2 : Pick up Erixon, demote Wotherspoon / Potter. Keep Erixon as the No 7 guy, boosts our AHL roster to have their top dog there, especially with Ortio out.

As a bonus... he might actually be good. Either case, he has no choice but to fight for his career, as with his 5th (?) NHL team as a tweener, he's not far from going back to the KHL (that I believe is already dying, which may be flooding other European leagues soon?), SEL (which may be flooded with fallouts from the KHL?) or worse comes to worse... find some third rate league in China, or find himself another career.

Any of those, I'm fine with.

Would be hilarious if we picked him up.

But I just don't know if he deserves that much.

If he were claimed on waivers and then subsequently put on waivers by the claiming team (and went unclaimed the second time), Chicago would be able to reclaim him and send him down immediately without additional waivers.

Also, in order to play in the AHL after the trade deadline, the player must be in the AHL at the trade deadline. Even if they could claim him and then put him immediately back on waivers, Chicago would certainly reclaim him.

Exactly. He has shown a less than admirable attitude so far, but he is young. He has all the tools and the acquisition cost is essentially nothing. Why not take a chance that he grows up? (referring to any team, not just the Flames)

If we did claim him, we would have 4 young defenseman behind Brodie (90) that are all:

6'2" or taller, very good-skating, good at both ends of the ice, good shot, like to hit (mostly), and high hockey IQ

Wotherspoon (93)
Erixon (91)
Hickey (96)
Rafikov (95)

Why not pick him up? Worse thing that happens is you don't like his attitude and let him walk in the summer.

Not shocked someone would claim him, but I expect him to be in the same position again by this time next year.

Good pickup by the Leafs, how's the Oilers don't take a flyer is beyond me. Buffalo at least has some young d so that makes sense, but Edmonton?

Erixon would have made the Oilers half decent, because good is bad and bad is good in Edmonton, it would have been a disaster for that organization.

isn't edmonton further down the waiver list since they picked someone off waivers already this year?
