This note from Elias provides further context to the type of clutch season #Flames sophomore Sean Monahan is having.
Assuming it is from NHL PR.

Full quote from Sutter:
Quote:
On why Calgary has been “effective” against Los Angeles this season:
They’re not just [effective] versus Los Angeles, it’s a good hockey club. You know what? They’ve gotten really good goaltending this year, and there’s good speed to their team, a good work ethic. I don’t think Monahan gets enough credit in the league. Everybody talks about the centermen in this conference, and they don’t talk about Sean Monahan, and they should. [Reporter: Who does he remind you of, what you’ve seen in the past? Because he’s so young.] You know, he’s probably in that Toews group, in terms of that all-around guy who can play minutes, and play situations and play against top guys – all that. He’s probably in that group of guys as a young player. I mean, he comes with that, and he’s done that. [Reporter: How do you play against him? Is there a way to limit him? Is it playing him more physical? Did that work in the last game you guys faced him?] Top players play against top players. [Reporter: Individual performances?] Yeah. I mean, we have two top centermen, and usually those guys have a way of sawing each other off.

Are you serious? All three goalies have been good this year. A major reason why we're still in the hunt.

I would say the goaltending has been very average - so do the stats

Hot goaltending certainly bailed out the Flames in October, but it's been mediocre since then.

On the plus side Ortio actually has above average potential. Hopefully he can steal the position next season.

We're:
16th in 5v5 save percentage
27th in shorthanded save percentage
BUT because we take so few penalties, we're actually 12th in all-situations save percentage.
So basically, our team's discipline probably led to a mirage that we're getting "great" goaltending... I can see why Sutter thinks that. Contrast that with, say, Winnipeg, who are 13th in 5v5, 18th in SH but take so many penalties they're 19th in all-situations save percentage.

Stats don't always tell all the story though. Lots of nights we have won can zero in on clutch performances/goals by our D and forwards but can also be attributed to timely saves which both goalies have managed to perform when it counts this year (Last night is the perfect example, Hiller even blew the 2-1 lead, Monahan spells out clutch again but then Hiller makes a 10 bell save on a partial break from a play out of no where with 2 minutes left to perserve the 2 points). Definitely not even close to other-worldly or even semi-elite stats wise, much closer to middle of the pack for both goalies but still without them carrying the load at certain times this year we are not a win away from playoffs IMO.

Yeah both goalies have been hot at times and Ortio came in and played great when Hiller seemed to hit a wall and Ramo was injured.

That's pretty much what average goaltending is: hot at times, but a few too many weak ones. And at the end of the day, middle-of-the-pack numbers.

Just to necro an old thread... so, is he a #1 centre? I think his career body of work says yes. Maybe not a top 10 guy but definately a #1.
