Gotta love August. One guys says Monahan's rookie season "wasn't all that impressive" and when people counter that people start coming back as though the original contention was "Monahan's rookie season was incredible, better than Johathan Towes, Jarome Iginla, Dion Phaneuf..."

That's funny because it's actually a typo - the correct spelling is inarguably

And actually I'm wrong. Unless we're talking about scientific facts, everything is in fact arguable, so I should have used that instead. Except only fools would disagree with me in this case

I haven't read the responses this way. I think it is safe to assume by the number of responses, that most view Monahan's season as "impressive", but I don't see it as blind enthusiasm. Rather, most are pointing out that the his totals are impressive for an 18/19 year old and that a lack of highlight reel toe drags does not diminish his accomplishments.

I disagree with some that feel that he is getting "garbage goals". No doubt he gets most of his points within 15 feet of the net, but if it were so easy, everyone would be doing it. He is just good at hockey.

I agree, but I think he will have better career production than Langkow. I see Monahan eventually producing like Langkow did during his first few years on the Flames roster. That would be quite good for a 2nd line center.

I'm hoping Bennett will turn into a Gilmour and be the Flames #1 center for years to come.

Imo, I think Monahan and Bennett will both be 1st/2nd line centers. It'll just depend on either the match up or whatever line is hotter that gets the top minutes.

After what I saw last year from Sean, he is perfectly capable of becoming that 1st line center we haven't had in a long time.

I'd say 45-50 points for the money hands. More assists this year thanks in part to playing with Johnny Hockey on the powerplay.

Monahan didn't play like a superstar in his first season, let's not blow it out of proportion. He was still a -20 and pretty lacking on the assists side of things, but he was way above your average rookie. He's got a ways to go to get 1st line center consideration from me. It's very early on yet. He needs to get his faceoffs, assists, defensive play, and foot speed up to an above average NHL level to get there. However, I won't rule out the possibility. It's fair to set his projection as a solid 2nd line center, with the definite chance of him exceeding that.

A potential three headed snake of Monahan-Bennett-Jankowski down the middle if all goes right and all reach their potential is downright erection inducing. Throw in guys like Backlund, Arnold and Knight as contingencies or wingers or trade bait and wow... Plus whoever gets drafted with the 2015-1st... so much potential.

Add four inches onto Langkow and you got a hell of a player.

This is exactly what I'm talking about...

Where did anyone insinuate he played like a superstar, or blew his season out of proportion?

But Monahan isn't impressive like Toews... not yet. IMO Toews is impressive because you can bank on him putting up 20+ goals and 60+ points in a season while being one of the, if not the, best two-way centers in the league (plus all the intangibes) while making his teammates better. Monahan doesn't have that package of attributes yet.

Langkow was a more compact 2 way forward with a pass-first/playmaking mentality and good defensive instincts. Monahan is a big C with high IQ, a great release and a nose for the net. Yet to be seen whether he's a 2 way player yet IMO.

Don't see that comparison making sense at all. I guess you could argue the "2 way player" thing if you think Monny will round out his game more as he matures (which most do). But playing styles totally different.

People already penciling him in as a sure 1st line center in this league.

If that were already determined, then he would've had a far better season than he did. The possibility is there, but it's far from a sure thing.

I'm guessing his nickname is Gator, and Monahan hit a 't' by accident at the end being next to 'r'.

This thread got weird.
First it's like monahan rules! (Rightfully so)
Then suddenly it's like monahan kinda sucks.

Glad to see so many people defending monahan.

Ps monahan rules
