Or is that because of the continuity of the players in the room, being led to play with a win at all costs mentality?

Um can you break that down a little further? Not sure what your meaning.

You know what wigs me out is that Monahan scored on 41-year-old Martin Brodeur, who won the Stanley Cup in 94-95 when Sean was less than a year old. He said it was cool because he 'grew up' watching Brodeur, and he meant it! Brodeur has quite literally been in the NHL for all of Monahan's life!

The Quote of the Day on the NHL Gamecenter website:
"I just, sometimes, pinch myself wondering if I need to check his birth certificate. The poise that he's showing for an 18-year-old kid ... he's having fun. He's bringing passion, he's bringing excitement and he's learning. He's a pretty special kid." — Calgary coach Bob Hartley on 18-year-old Sean Monahan, whose goal and assist helped the Flames top the Canadiens on Wednesday
Happy Birthday kid

Instead of tanking at the end of last year, Hartley had the young guys playing balls to the wall and it resulted in wins. Fast forward to this year and it looks like the team has bought into that system and are getting the results to show for it.
I don't think it's a coincidence that the two are at least somewhat correlated. It's like the rebuild started last year, but instead of losing to get a higher draft pick, Hartley was teaching this team how to scratch out wins with an "inferior" roster of players.
Geez, maybe that Monahan crane kick photo isn't a coincidence either... wax on, wax off

Yes, further to this thought, Baertschi deserves some love too for his play of late. Let's not forget the golden boy that we had before Monahan came.

Monahan also has a five-game points streak (four goals, two assists), which is the longest for a Flames rookie since 31-year-old Sergei Makarov had points in seven straight games to begin his NHL career in 1989-90, which was before the league re-wrote the rules around rookie eligibility.

Thank God Burke works for us, lest we have traded Sven away to him after four years for bit players.

I don't think we trade Sven but with Burke on board, we are more likely to trade him than if he wasn't President of Hockey Ops.

He's playing well but the lack of knee sliding through center ice after a game winning goal concerns me.

Monahan to baertschi... Baertschi to Monahan! The future is now! And it's only the beginning... Strong start for jankowski tonight with 2 goals in his first game of the college hockey season. He has a real shot at making the Canadian world junior team if Monahan isn't there... A huge bonus if that happens cause I think it could help his development more than any of the other flames prospects. Poirier QMJHL player of the week. Gaudreau a hobey baker favourite this year. Klimchuk leading the Regina pats in scoring. Hanowski having a great start to the season in abbotsford... What a rebuild!

Once he actually hits his stride and rounds out his NHL game he's going to be a top 5 centre in the NHL.

On that note, who was the youngest captain in Flames history?

I love the hype and excitement around Monahan but I'm hoping that we're not setting him up for unrealistic expectations. We don't want Phaneuf 2.0 again, where we turned on him as quickly as we praised him.

For me, the difference is Phaneuf had all the tools and the speculation/hope was he would put it all together and be Pronger style elite two way defender. Dion had the physical gifts, but there was a lot of waiting and gnashing of teeth hoping he develop defensively.
Monahan, though, seems to be a much more complete player at his respective stage. He doesn't appear to be dominating physically like Phaneuf did, but, his overall game is better. He looks smarter out there.

Draft Pick
|
Wow, the Calgary Sun closes it's comment section way too early.
Ok, I don't post often and admit that I was one of the people breaking their ankle jumping off the wagon last year. I was really down on Iggy and his play for years.
I've turned a new leaf.
Monahan has impressed me beyond belief. For once the Flames have drafted well. He reminds me of Toews in so many ways. Positionally he is incredibly sound for such a young player, with the added bonus of being dangerous offensively and he has size. I love that!
As much as I liked Monahan again'st Jersy, with some props to Baerchi and McDonald. Bouma impressed the hell out of me. His heart last night is what makes teams successful. I can promise you that if Bouma keeps playing like he did last night, he will stay in the NHL and Hartley will give him more ice time. It's players like Bouma that a talent laden Edmonton would dearly love to have.
