It's amazing how UFA for vets have changed in recent years.
With a low risk deal like that makes for an excellent deal when expectations are so very low.

Yeah, as much as Kevin Lowe is an idiot, you really can point to the Vanek offer sheet as being something that altered the salary structure of the NHL. Granted the younger free agency age was always going to shift the age bracket where the maximum earning was. But the younger RFA aged guys started getting a lot more money much sooner, and with the pie only so big, it took the money away from elsewhere.

Good veteran depth guy for Nashville.

I don't think so. He's pretty garbage now. He's not what he used to be. He used to be decent-good at one time but that was like about 3 years ago and before. His game has deteriorated badly over the last 2 years.

He's likely playing out his last year as an NHLer. I can't see him recovering his game enough to be NHL-calibre anymore, and what he has now is not good AND he's on the wrong side of the age bracket too.

He still played 64 regular season games and 14 playoff games for the Bolts last year when they made the conference finals.

At $700k a guy who is cheap enough to be on the farm, but is still good enough to play on a playoff team, and has 127 games of playoff experience is the definition of good veteran depth.

For the price he doesn't have to be an every day NHLer and he is still servicable enough.
