Ya it sure looked staged, but so be it. Good all the way around either way.
I assumed it had to be staged. It would be almost impossible to do otherwise. What if they didn't want to be on camera? What if they're angry there's a camera there? What if they're not home, or is Johnny waiting until the people order a pizza? Does Johnny sit in a pizza 73 until there's a call from a family of a sick kid?

Yes

LOL some nobody on twitter trying to start a rumor that Arizona is trying to offersheet Gaudreau. Don't fall for it
1. Gaudreau can't recieve an offersheet
2. He is claiming the terms are for 8 years, $72.2 mil. No one but the Flames can give him 8 years.
3. Arizona is going to give Gaudreau $9 million/year? That is half their operating budget!!!

Speaking of which, do players ever turn down offer sheets? Would we even hear about it if one did?
Just thinking of Monahan, and how genuine he seems about wanting to play in Calgary for a long time and whether it would be likely that he'd turn down an offer sheet from another team knowing full well he will eventually come to terms with the Flames anyways.

I am sure there are discussions about offer sheets (i.e. asking the agent what term, $ it would take), but I have a hard time believing that a team would present a formal offer sheet unless the agent indicated that his client would sign.

Makes sense. So for all we know a few teams may have inquired about Monahan's interest in signing with them and all they got from his agent was a polite "Thanks for the interest but Sean is happy in Calgary and is confident he will have a deal done with them shortly"

Isn't it probable that the agent, whose primary task is to get the best possible deal for his client , would highly endorse Monahan signing an offer sheet if it is a (considerably) better offer than what the Flames have on the table?
It serves his client's best interests monetarily and still allows the Flames to match.
It also puts the Flames in a bit of a jam re the Gaudreau negotiations, cap wise.

What if they were...wait for it...Oiler fans, God forbid?

Money talks.
How are Monahan's interests served by jamming the Flames' negotiations with Gaudreau and the salary cap? I would imagine that for both Gaudreau and Monahan the other player's long term status is of considerable importance.

I didn't word that sentence very well or put it in context.
I meant that a signed offer sheet by Monahan would be a negative in Flames negotiations with Gaudreau....not a motive in Monahan' s decision to sign the hypothetical offer sheet.

I would expect Monahan's agent to see these consequences, and in light of such is likely to avoid any decision that impedes the Flames ability to sign both of their top line stars.

I understand your point, however, Monahan's agent has only one responsibility.
That is to render his client the best possible contract.
He does not work for Gaudreau.
Could Monahan reject a considerly higher offer sheet because of his allegiance to Gaudreau and the Flames?
It is possible.
Do you think it is probable?

"Rendering [for] his client the best possible contract" is not entirely a matter of dollar-value and term. It IS in both Monahan's and Gaudreau's best interest to play together, and they can only do so with the Flames.
I tend to think—like sureloss mentioned—that any offer-sheet extended by another team would follow from a lot of preliminary leg-work. In Monahan's case, the reason he likely has not signed an offer sheet is because he has not received one. The reason he has not received one is likely because other teams have been informed that his top priority is to remain in Calgary, and to continue playing with Gaudreau. Again, I think it is likely that both players and their agents see it in their best interests to remain together, which also means that they are probably more inclined to be flexible in their negotiations with the Flames.
