Agreed. These charts don't show other key defensive stats like puck battle wins and hits.

Puck battle wins aren't a stat and hits is unreliable as the definition of a hit varies from arena to arena (and it really isn't all that much a positive stat anyways since a precondition of a hit is that your team doesn't have control of the puck).
Really, In a sense, the chart does show those things since if you're doing them in a way that leads to positive outcomes it will be reflected in on ice results (Ex. if your hits and puck battles separate the opponent from the puck then they can't be taking any shots).

The name Dekeyser reminds me of one of my favorite awkward Grant Pollock Interviews. This one in particular was with Clarke Wilm.
Pollock: "Clarke, do you mind if we call you 'The Kaiser'?"
Wilm: "Sure Grant"

Seems about the going rate for a second pairing defenseman.

Looking at the remaining contracts for the aging and declining players on the Wings roster (Zetterberg, Nielsen, Howard, Fransen, and Kronwall) tells me they will be having some dark years ahead.

Danny Dekeyser's new deal drops TJ Brodie ($4.65M AAV) out of the top 50 for highest paid NHL d-men -- and Brodie has FOUR more years left.

A lot has changed in 15 years. The last five has been nothing more than treading water, trying to keep the streak alive. IMO, for years Holland was being propped up by his former AGMs and advisors (Bowman, Nill, Yzerman, etc). They are a shadow of their former selves and they don't seem to be finding franchise players at the end of the draft anymore. The other shoe is going to drop in a year or two, and it won't be pretty. I know people have been saying this for years but I think we really are going to see Detroit turn into an bottom 10 team very soon.

I don't see how that has any relevance on the Wings' current situation.

Disagree. Larkin, tatar and nqyist fill in halftop 6. They have quality depth mrazek is a very solid young goalie.
Jurco and mantha have high potential.

They have some pieces for sure, but those forwards aren't even really as skilled as what the Oilers put out there every night. And its not working so great for them. Obviously they have a better situation in goal than Edm, but their defensive situation is about as awful. Kronwall was never able to pick up the slack after Lidstrom left and outside Dekeyser, they haven't really had any young players that have stuck. The sad thing is a couple seasons ago, they had multiple defensive prospects all make first team of their junior leagues (Sproul, Oullet and someone else) in the same year. But none of those players has managed to crack their lineup.
Up front, I am not even sure Tatar and Nyquist can carry a line without having Datsyuk or Zetterberg around to either be on the line as the workhorse, or to be on the top line and draw away the shutdown defensemen. Larkin looks to be the top shelf player that can carry a line, but 1 guy can't do it all. Also, Jurco has shown nothing that would indicate he will be a contributor in the NHL. Mantha had a monster year in juniors after being drafted, but has been in the organizations dog house for a couple years with the lazy stigma getting attached. Might be one of those guys that peaked in juniors.
I agree 100% with Fire of the Phoenix that Ken Holland does not have what it takes to put together a good team. I think he hit the nail on the head about the assistants perhaps being the real brains and now that they are gone its been awful. To me, their organization has had 2 themes they always love to preach about : loyalty and over-seasoning young players. For the loyalty, I think they have never really seen players taking hometown discounts or free agents coming to Detroit because they have a feeling that they will get treated great. All it has done is saddled them with bad contracts and players that don't have the skills anymore. Heck, I am surprised Dan Cleary still isn't playing. And for over ripening their players, it has led to many never panning out. While there is always the mentality of having to earn a spot, so many training camps and pre-seasons would see young players looking really good only to get sent down because they 'still had options left.'
I too think the wings are in for a very dark period very soon.

This contract is flat out bad. Dekeyser is not a bad player, but this contract is.

If Larkin, Tatar and Nyquist are your top 3 forwards, you're in rough shape.
Is there a weaker set of top 3 forwards in the league?
(I know they still have Zetterberg, but this is looking forward)
