Tennis, Anyone?
Tennis seems like a pretty simple thing to pick up. Buy a racket and a ball...
Are there recreational clubs that don't cost a pile of money to join, or... I don't even know the right questions to ask, actually. Do any of you guys play?

It takes enough stamina and energy watching this years' Wimbledon, I can't imagine how tough it would be actually playing it

I did with my ex, dont any more now that I am single - probably should as its great exercise. I think you can play at the Kinsman - we played at the YMCA early hours as they only had one hardwood court.
I kind of know the scoring, but still dont understand why its like that.

I tried playing Tennis a few times. I sucked so bad I never really tried it again.
My favorite is Squash. Really really easy to pick up and one game will give you a insane work out. I like playing it as much as hockey and I just started this year.

Excellent game to play. As for the origins of the scoring:
Quote:
Background of Tennis Scoring
As for the history of tennis scoring, there are two background stories:
1. that it has its origin in medieval numerology. The number 60 was considered to be a "good" or "complete" number back then, in about the same way you'd consider 100 to be a nice round figure today. The medieval version of tennis, therefore, was based on 60--the four points when 15, 30, 45 (which we abbreviate to 40) and 60, or game.
2. The system may be based on the presence of a clock face at the end of the tennis court. A quarter move of the appropriate hand was made after each rest, with the score being called as 15, 30, or 45. As the hand was moved to 60, this was the game. This didn't explain a score of 40, however.

I tried playing tennis when I was younger. I sucked too.
I either missed the ball or I hit it and it went anywhere but where I wanted it to (into the net, outside the lines, or it got launched right out of the tennis court...
I then took up racket ball... way more fun and you didn't have to run all over the place chasing down the damn ball.

As to where to play, there are perfectly good courts in Woodbine that nobody uses anymore.

Calgary has tennis courts up the wazoo (at least here in the NW they do). There's like 8 Tennis courts within 15 minutes of me. Grab some friends who are interested in playing (preferably of the opposite sex if you can hehe) and just go and give it a go.
It's the easiest go out anytime on a summer night and play for free sport.

All my tennis buddies moved away. My best friend and I used to be ridiculously even in skill and we would have ridiculously long matches. Almost like Isner's match. Then he joined a league in Atlanta and the last time he was in town we played he totally kicked my butt.
