I like this deal for the Pens. Didn't give up a ton unless these guys really break out but at the same time none of them could amount to a whole lot either. You already know Kessel is an elite scorer. I hope Sid and Phil click and make magic.

Also told Toronto is eating between15-25% of Kessel contract.

Say what you will about Big Tuna, but he was a lot closer on the return that Toronto got back than a lot of the posters on CP thought they would get.

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
As per @TSNBobMcKenzie, Penguins trade Spaling, Kapanen, Harrington and two picks to Leafs for Kessel and two other contracts...

maybe, but I don't think the pick is anything special as it will be a late one and depending how you view the players...its pretty meh.
If indeed there is salary retained, then its a pretty underwhelming return IMO.

Pittsburgh won this trade if they were to get the Leafs to retain on that.

"If you think Toronto has to retain salary you don't understand hockey" out some such nonsense was what he said

Pretty good deal for both sides. Toronto is rebuilding, so they get younger and move out a big contract with term. Pittsburgh needs to be in win mode for as long as Sid and Geno are in their prime. Having the Leafs cover a % of Kessels salary makes it that much more palatable

Its not great, but remembering some of the posters on CP were telling Tuna that if they ate $1 million they would still only get back a Raymond type contract and a 2nd. Some proposlas were even worse than that.

I doubt Harrington or Kapanen turn out to be much, we'll see, but for me, it's not that exciting of a return.
Leaf fans wanted that one really top end prospect out of the trade. IMO, they didn't get it at all - despite retaining salary (in the form of taking salaries back).

Looking forward to seeing how they waste all this latest batch of potential.
This is a good deal for the Pens. We've waited a very long time to see Crosby with a talented sniper on his wing.

Those are probably the same people who were saying Taylor Hall has little trade value. The bias some posters have is quite illogical.

Pens didn't give up anything SUPER ELITE as far as prospects go.. makes me wonder what the flames could of given up..
For those who say they dont want kessel on the flames I don't really get it for 5 mil a season
Frolik - 42 points avg - 4.6MIL
Kessel - 70 points avg (30 goals) - 5 mil
Not much different money wise, and a line of: JG - SM - PK would be really good imo

True...but he was also adamant that "not a cent" would be eaten by the Leafs...which seemed like a ridiculous thing to believe when the facts were staring him right in the face.

If the price was Klimchuk Wotherspoon and a 1st I think that might have been worth paying. Preferably a lottery protected 1st. Assuming they ate salary.
