in a division with Edmonton, Arizona, and Vancouver I don't see the Flames being out of the playoff hunt at any point

He has played at an elite level for only two seasons and he was injured for around a quarter of each of those two seasons. He missed the entire playoffs this season.

He isn't worth Subban money. Not at his age. Not looking at the body of work.

That is a harsh statement for a guy we all love. Especially considering the leadership and character he brings to the team. But it's the truth. We can't afford to pay him that amount. Not with term.

That said, Treliving is smart. Giordano wants to stay. A reasonable deal likely gets done.

But the same logic do you think the Flames should counter with 5yrs @ 1M

Starting negotiation too high can be just as destructive as too low

9M, is too high?

I'm not sure about that.

But it is a negotiation so I think it makes perfect sense...no details have come out on term and the board seems to agree that a 7.5-8M number makes sense.

So not sure how 9M is TOO high to start off with?

No problem with his agent starting at that figure...

Notes:
PK will be getting $11M in 16-17
Weber is getting $14M right now and next year, $12M in 16-17
Suter made $12M last year, $11M this year and $9M for the next 5 years
Dion is making $8M

Lots of comparables.

The cap hit and years of contract are what's important.

Indeed. But if Tree already said we're looking at 2-3 year offer, which could have realistically happened already, then Gio would be in his right to ask $9mil per for a short deal.

The only rumor we heard so far was that was the initial ask. There could be, and probably is, more to the story.

I think a very reasonable deal will be made at the end of the day. And like i said previously, the TERM is more important than the dollars in my opinion.

I'd pay him 11 million a season if the deal was 3 years or less.

One of these things is not like the others.

His term better be short if it's any where near that.

His long term injuries in consecutive seasons at his age should hurt him a bit negotiations.

The great thing about assumptions is that it can work both ways. Since we can't speculate what the talks are lets not make assumptions and use them like its fact

A 9 mil cap hit hurts my eyes, especially for someone who will be 33 when that kicks in. I know it was a different time and all, but even Iggy got a lot of flack when he was 33 and had a 7mil cap hit. There are few players in the league today who are worth 7mil+ at that age. Is Gio one of them? Well time will tell when we get to that point. Gio's a late bloomer, and if he was still in his 20's I'd be all for it. But 33 is awfully late to be handing out someone a 9 mil cap hit. Especially with youngsters who need raises and he's a guy who's injured frequently.

Then again, he's the captain and the pulse of the team. A franchise player who probably would have made a difference in the playoffs. A guy who could conceivably contend for the Norris when he's healthy. There are incredibly few Dmen like him in the game today. For that reason alone you keep him. I think Gio knows we have a good thing going with this team. I don't expect a Brodie-like contract. But Ritch Winter (his agent) went to U of C, so maybe Treliving can play on his heart strings and convince him a cup in the future if Gio signs lower!

8x4 is good for both sides. If he has 5 seasons as term, I'd like to see a front loaded structure at 7.5aav

I don't think mid 20 year olds signing through all their prime years is a comparable. Plus a couple of those contacts aren't even legal anymore.

If Gio plays hard ball I got no issue trying to see what kind of offers are out there for trade. 9 million is too steep.

Standard negotiating tactic. I'd say they're going in about a million higher than the salary they expect to get. $8m AAV for Gio seems about right to me.

How in the blue he!! would anyone know what the ask is right now?

Seriously, who would gain anything from leaking that? Stupid.

Agents. It's always the agents. Give the GM an easy out. Want $7M? Tell the world you were asking for $9M and the shrewd GM stole you at $7M.

I'd be happy with 7 but realize that probably won't happen. 8 not exactly happy with but it's probably close to market value.
