Before anyone goes crazy, please realize the difference between an "ask" and a "demand". He asked for 9... he did not demand it. Which means Calgary will so no, and offer less... say 7.8. Gio's camp will come back with an ask around 8.5.

They'll likely settle for a few years around 8.25, and a few years around 6, for a 6yr deal @ $7.125 per. That'd be my guess anyway.

Well, my initial ask was a threesome, but I settled on getting a phone number.

Keep in mind any Giordano extension won't start until the 2016-17 season. He'll be 33 years old then.

Hoping that's just part of the negotiation process. Too much for someone over 30 with a health history.

Start at 9M maybe and go down to 5M over 6 years. Seems like a fair trade off.

I hope for The Flames sake they let him walk, he's a band-aid, and the team was still successful without him

Hahaha what? Get out of here. He's the captain of the team and one of the top defencemen in the NHL.

He will be 33 years old when he begins his contract. I can't see anything over a 5-year term as reasonable.

4 years at $7.5 million per year seems realistic. That puts him as the 4th highest CAP hit among Defensemen in the NHL.

Subban = 9
Weber = 7.85
Suter = 7.53

Id say he's in the 7 mil range. 9 is a huge overpayment.

Quite frankly I'm more interested in the term than the money. He can have $8 million on a three year deal but if he wants five years he better accept that the pay will be adjusted accordingly for the back half when he's no longer a top pairing defenseman as I don't see him on the top pairing when he's 37/38 years old.

Its an interesting scenario and one that the Flames should be careful with given Gio's age and injury history. Gio deserves huge amounts of praise for his recent play but he hasn't won any Norris trophies yet, and he doesn't often play a full season. He certainly deserves a massive paycheck -- but I for one don't think Gio is the teams best player or leader in 3 years. Its a matter of time until a guy like Monahan takes the C and is the go to guy here.

Would you start a negotiation stating your bare minimum first? Or would you aim high?

Gio realizes he probably isn't getting term due to his age and health, so he's aiming for top dollars. I don't blame him and neither should you. If he wants 9x8, then yes, we trade him.

Well letting him "walk" would be foolish but if they can't come to a deal by midway through the season they should trade him, especially if they're out of the playoff hunt.

Love Gio and all, but that's too much. 5 x $7 seems like a reasonable deal.

don't think anyone was suggesting to let him walk, IF the price is too high trade him for a MASSIVE return

Giordano stayed in Calgary last time around despite his agent recommending going elsewhere, and stayed for less money than his agent targeted. Hopefully Giordano loves it here so much he will do the same this time, but his agent, Ritch Winter, doesn't hold the same feelings toward the team unless directly instructed to by his client. Winter is ruthless agent, which, from a player's perspective isn't a bad thing, but Winter will bend at his player's advice. So it shouldn't be surprising the negotiation will start at an extreme and probably very slowly work its way toward what we expect, perhaps with Gio advising his agent to take a little less to finish things like last time.

Im okay with this but its completely dependant on term.

Id consider:
3 year x $10M = $30M Total (36yo @ expiry)
4 year x $8M = $32M Total (37 yo @ expiry)
5 year x $7M = $35M Total (38 yo @ expiry)

Honestly I'd prefer option 1
