Let’s say it’s Stamkos vs Hedman + cirelli. Im taking Stamkos.

Eichel or Pietrangelo +William Karlsson. I’m taking Eichel

Have to take Celebrini if we win 1OA.

It's a more interesting discussion if we win 2OA, but I still think you just make the pick unless someone knocks your socks off with a trade proposal.

I'm against trading down in the first round in almost any circumstances.

Historically with the Flames it's a sign they're screwing up. The guy they want is available later, and they know for certain he's available later because no other team is interested at him at this spot, and for some reason they are zeroed in on this lower ranked prospect, passing up several good players who go on to be impact NHLers.

Wasn't the last time the Flames traded down in 2020, when they traded down twice and wound up with Zary? Looks pretty good in hindsight

Yep, moved from 19 to 22, then from 22 to 24.

- NYR selected Braden Schneider at 19
-- Schneider has 48pts in 206gp with the Rangers

- WSH selected Hendrix Lapierre at 22
-- Lapierre has 23pts in 57gp with the Capitals

- CGY selected Connor Zary at 24
-- Zary has 34pts in 63gp with the Flames

Other guys the Flames passed on to move down twice:
- Shakir Mukhamadullin
- Yegor Chinakov
- Tyson Foerster

Flames also picked up Jeremie Poirier and Jake Boltmann with the extra picks as part of the moves.

So all things considered, seems like a good decision for that year (so far).

Isn't this odd? Why wouldn't they have a set date for this in the NHL calender?

Bribes are due into the league office on or before April 30th, thus the delay.

At #2 depending on the team and the offer I am much more open to seeing us trade down.

If montreal said we give you the monahan pick back for swapping 2 and five who says no?

I guess it depends how much the Flames like Demidov really. As for me if I was Conroy I would absolutely say yes.

As you go further down in the draft, the difference between picks generally becomes less prominent. Trading down five spots from #1 is totally different than doing that at #19.

It could work out to trade down but at the end of the day there are only so many spots for young players to be put in a role to succeed. Not all our prospects will need 1st line roles and PP roles, some will turn into our future Backlund/Coleman's but only 4 forwards play on the 1st PP and 3 on the 1st line. If you rebuild properly, you should be able to get a few 1st/2nd line caliber players. Franchise players do not grow on trees, you have a chance for one you take him and hope you draft well around him.
