Next up, PIT. Get sense this may have been first of all deals done with VGK. PIT sends draft pick to VGK to ensure new home for M-A Fleury.

News Update

Chris Johnston @reporterchris

Vegas selects Marc-Andre Fleury from Pittsburgh -- huge roar from the crowd -- and gets a 2020 2nd-rounder in a trade.

Not bad for Vegas, since he's probably the guy they wanted anyway

Does this make sense? Who would they take otherwise that would be worth sending a pick to secure?

Probably less about saving the other players and more about guaranteeing that they get Fleury's salary off the books to allow spending on other areas of the team. Nobody wants to pay their backup 5 million I don't think.

Should have traded him to Calgary (if he consented) and received an asset.

Hopefully the Flames trade a pick to assure Brouwer's transition.

I get that, but in theory they could have traded him to another team and received more assets rather that spending them to get rid of him. So the end cost would have involved losing another player.

Still a head scratcher to me that they are giving a pick along with maf.

Yeah what you say makes sense. However the goalie market is a very limited one. Very few teams looking for a #1 and thus very few places MAF could go. You had CGY, VGK, WPG and ARI arguably unless I'm missing a team. If Fleury didn't want to go to CGY, ARI or WPG then where do you deal him? There's nowhere left. And that's assuming those teams all really wanted MAF and we don't know if that's the case either. Maybe ARI is looking to go younger in goal than MAF.

When you really think about where MAF could've been traded its pretty clear the market was extremely small. Throw his NTC in the mix and it looks like he couldn't be traded anywhere.

Pens also had an issue with the expansion draft rules. If they trade Fleury they still had to acquire another signed goalie to expose for the expansion draft.

Maybe they didn't like what was available or other teams/agents were trying to screw them in acquiring/sign a goaltender.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Penguins worried I think that with a market flooded with goalies, Vegas had many options. Had to entice Vegas to ensure they took Fleury...

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Because Penguins needed cap relief that comes with losing Fleury, got guys to sign, etc.

I find it hard to believe that he would rather go to an expansion club in Vegas than Calgary at this point in his career. Doesn't seem to add up at all unless he has issue with the franchise/staff in place.

Good god, no. Brouwer is coming off of the worst year of his playing career. While he may not live up to his salary he is certainly a useful player who will be better next year. The Flames are not in such dire cap straits that they need to spend assets to relieve themselves of a contract.

So, who will be the #2 goalie in Pittsburgh this year? Will they bring Tristan Jarry into the NHL full time, or will they sign a seasoned backup?

Murray is so young, you'd think it'd be the latter.

Reading this doesn't make me too happy. Coyotes are thrilled with return on Smith I imagine.

A second, in a lousy draft, is just stupid. You would have to pay me two first round picks to not take Murray. Fluery is just not worth that
