Icon30 Florida sends Smith to Vegas for a 2018 4th

It was suggested to me FLA's deal with VGK MAY actually be for Vegas to end up acquiring both Marchessault and Rielly Smith (also exposed).

Counter-intuitive as it may seem, there's been talk FLA was trying to move both Marchessault and Smith even before VGK entered the picture.

Bob McKenzie‏Verified account @TSNBobMcKenzie

Lately, there's been chatter that VGK have been talking about "secondary" expansion draft trades involving Marchessault/Smith.

Bob McKenzie‏Verified account @TSNBobMcKenzie
Replying to @TSNBobMcKenzie
Does that mean VGK will get Marchessault/Smith from FLA and subsequently move one or both? Can't report it as fact by any means...

Bob McKenzie‏Verified account @TSNBobMcKenzie

...but mere possibility, real or imagined, is one of most fascinating expansion draft rumours/reports, call em whatever you like. We'll see.

News Update

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
now
FLA also gets Reilly Smith and a fourth from FLA in addition to taking Marchessault in draft

That would be a real score for Vegas to get both of a team's exposed young players.

I could see Reilly Smith end up in CGY in exchange for pick or prospect. Especially if Vegas takes Brouwer.

That seems like a great deal for Vegas, interesting to see if this happens.

How can trades take place if the other team isn't trading anything, I don't really get it.

However many Vegas trades we see tonight to protect or pick certain guys, I think we see the same number flipping some guys in the coming week or two. Looking at a few of the rumours makes you raise your eyebrows. I was adding up some of the suspected cap dumps and there's a good $25M+ in just a few players. That's a third of their cap and they still have to fill out most of their roster. Either some of those guys are getting flipped or a bunch of picks will be for guys making under $1M.

Wonder if we could somehow convince them to swap Smith for Brouwer.

Smith contract is 2 years longer, and $500k more but I feel like he is a better fit for this team.

Gives the Knights a shorter contract and some veteran leadership.

I would love it if either of them end up here, but who knows.

If they end up in Calgary it will lessen the sting some, but losing both from the Panthers sucks donkey balls.

Seems like that Yandle NMC really boned them. Otherwise they would have lost almost nothing.

I don't understand this rumor at all. To me both these guys have positive value, especially Marchessault. I can't see Florida losing both of them.

Just another reason to hate Yandle.

Marchessault might be safe

TVA sports reporter:

L.A. Lariviere @L_A_theRiver
Marchessault is not the #FlaPanthers player going to #GoldenKnights. If he is, it's news to him (which would be surprising).

^ Doesn't rule out the possibility of him going somewhere else

Also just means he wasn't the player they selected off of the protection list.

Could still mean they take Smith but the trade worked out means that Marchessault gets traded to the Knights tomorrow.

McKenzie confirms that both Smith and Marchessault have been informed they are going to Vegas

I'm presuming FLA had to reduce its budget. In order to move Smith's contract, Marchessault had to be used as inducement. A $ deal IMO.

That's a nice pickup for Vegas. They'll need some players that can score, Marchessault fits the bill.

Clear emphasis on younger players so far. Nobody really old was taken in that first grouping
