Icon35 Isles may trade Grabovsky + 1st to VGK for selecting a designated player

According to their beat writer Arthur Staples.

Quote:
The Islanders have a deal in place to send their first-round pick to Vegas to steer the expansion franchise toward selecting a designated player off the Isles’ unprotected list, two NHL sources confirmed to Newsday on Monday. TSN first reported the existence of the deal.

The player designated for selection is still unknown, though clearly the goal for general manager Garth Snow is to clear some salary-cap space to upgrade the team’s roster before next season.

The deal also includes a third piece going to Vegas. There is a strong possibility that it would be Mikhail Grabovski, who has yet to be cleared to play after suffering a concussion in March of 2016. Grabovski’s $5-million cap hit is on the books for one more season for the Islanders, who are already within $4 million and change of the coming season’s $75-million salary cap.

I feel like that is a bad deal fo Vegas if that's all it is.

Nelson/De Hann etc would be worth more than a first in a trade and you wouldn't have to take a bad contract with it.

I'm glad we aren't in a position where we have to give up a first so Vegas won't take one of our good players

I agree kumelin, grabovski and a first doesn't steer me clear of Nelson and Bailey. Are those guys third line?

I'd have no problem if we moved a draft pick to entice Vegas to take Brouwer. I'd go as high as next year's second to rid us of that contract

They only reason they were not protected is the deal was already in place. That's why NYI protected 5 D

Which is fair enough. In that case the value needs to match the best of the two defenceman they'd have exposed instead, pulock perhaps? Two mediocre players and a 1st doesn't work for me on that one either.

Don't worry, I am sure we will be more than vulnerable when they go to add team #32.

The deal per Isles beat writer is:

Arthur Staple‏Verified account @StapeNewsday
No reason to ever doubt @TSNBobMcKenzie. So the deal is #Isles 1st, 15th overall and Grabovski to have Vegas select JF Berube.

Geez. What the heck is Vegas going to do with JF Berube?

I guess he plays for the Wolves?

I guess they like the 15th pick more than they liked Nelson or De Haan. Kind of indicates this draft might've gotten a bad rap.

Oh man, Vegas is making out like bandits in this expansion draft. Great job by McPhee so far. Wow.

Well the Isles were so scared of losing him on waivers that they kept him in a 3 goalie circus for a long time. Kind of indicates somebody believes he has NHL potential.

Maybe he backs up Fleury and they trade any other goalie they take?

Arthur Staple @StapeNewsday
Now I'm hearing there's another element to this #Isles deal with Vegas... We'll see in a few hours what it is.

flip Neal to the Islanders? new winger for Tavares?
