It would certainly throw a curve into the NHLPA dynamics, when certain players (often more established players, I'd guess more likely to be in leadership positions within the NHLPA) don't have the same motivation to avoid a lockout as others. These lockout-proof contracts for only some players could lend itself to in-fighting within the NHLPA. The end result could be more power for the NHL negotiating stance.
