Men's draw for Madrid is out - Felix will face Nishioka in the opening round while Shapo takes on Diaz Acosta who almost beat (and probably should have best) Oikos last week in Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Marina Stakusic wasn't messing around today...

it's as if he read Hugh Clarke's analysis from the Monte Carlo final, and implemented all the suggestions (aggressive return position, hammer Yogurt backhand, throw in occasional short slice). The latest blog entry from this morning confirms it.

You gotta feel for Thiem and this is in no way a slight to Kokkinakis as he is a fine player, but losing 6-1 6-3 in Madrid qualifying is just a tough look. The wrist will not allow Thiem to compete on the tour at the level that he was previously.

Marina Stakusic has qualified for the ITF event in Portugal winning her second qualification match earlier today. She has now cracked the top 200 as far as rankings are concerned and is looking poised to be a fixture on the WTA tour in the not too distant future. I like the fact that she's not being rushed and gaining valuable experience (she is still only 19 years old).

Shapo just won the first set 6-4 over Facundo Diaz Acosta. Some sparkling tennis from Denis in that opening set, let's hope he can continue this fine play.

Going the distance as Diaz Acosta takes set 2 6-3. Denis can win this match but I worry that he's going to revert to old Shapo and go for crazy shots.
Edit: As if on cue, Denis tosses in just a shocker of a service game and is broken to love. Diaz Acosta didn't have to do anything, Denis broke himself.

Shapo back on serve in set 3 with a brilliant return game.
Edit: And another break from Shapo - From 0-2 down to 4-2 up in set 3.

Suddenly Shapo is playing some of the most intelligent tennis that I've seen him play in a very long time. Is this a new Denis Shapovalov?
Edit: This approach today is the model for Shapo getting back into the top 20. Playing with margin and saving aggression for sensible balls. Diaz Acosta is not exactly prime time level on tour, but he's certainly a formidable opponent on clay.

The old Shapo would have just folded up shop and mailed in the rest of the match. So pleased to see him dig deep today and hang in there and battle. Onwards and upwards Shapo!!

Denis gets another Argentine in Etcheverry next, that will be just as tough as this just concluded match.

Watching Nadal today and just enjoying the moment, not thinking about how he looks or what his chances are to win the next round, just enjoying the time we have left to witness him.
