The goal is to put consoles into households. They've had a good week or so. With a price drop they may start to coax the 360 owners to go to the next product. That the thing that I think people are missing to a certain degree. The 360 is still selling a lot. That 360/microsoft ecosystem is a comfortable one for many many people and if they start to make the switch they could build some pretty significant momentum. Enough to beat PS4? probably not but enough to make this generation the virtual dead heat the last generation was.
Getting into China might end up being a pretty big deal.

Oh, this should be fun. I wonder if they'll lock/cripple the PC version to a lower frame-rate and resolution as well.

Assassin's Creed Unity will run at 900p/30fps on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Ubisoft has confirmed, with the publisher opting to aim for platform parity to avoid discussion over the differences in performance.
"We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff," senior producer Vincent Pontbriand told VideoGamer.com while explaining that it's the consoles' CPUs – not the GPU – that prevents Ubisoft Montreal from improving the game's performance.

So now not only can PC gamers complain that the consoles are holding games back, but PS4 owners can complain that the Xbox is holding them back now

That's actually rather stupid. If you can make one console perform better than another, then do so. It is the console manufacturer's problem, not theirs.

There had always been some speculation that Microsoft would start paying or "encouraging" developers to gimp PS4 versions to basically enforce parity given the relative power impairment on the Xbone. Didn't seem to be the case with the games in first year of this generation - Watch Dogs and AC Black Flag of particular note as they are from the same developer.
It always seemed to be a bit out there and seemed rather silly conspiracy talk, but here we are.

That's just ridiculous IMO. A developer should always be looking to maximize the performance of their product on each platform individually. While 900p and 1080p isn't really distinguishable to most people on a good TV it still is below the 1080p standard that has been set and expected in this gen. Quite frankly I'm surprised they can't hit 1080p on XB1 without Kinect and a year after the console launch. I will say if this new game is an upscaled version of the 720p 360/PS3 version like Black Flag was then it really won't matter if it's 900p or 1080p.

How is that Microsoft's fault? The only one to blame here is Ubisoft. However, I am laughing my ass off now that console owners will also enjoy ####ty console ports.

Because if the XB1 wasn't so weak this wouldn't be a problem.

Ubisoft did this so there wasn't any debate lol...opposite effect
This is why I have been on the side of PS4 they actually pushed for better hardware and not gimmicks. Oh well, consoles are mostly for exclusives anyway

I highly doubt Microsoft had any influence on this as if you read Ubisoft states that they need a lot of CPU for AI and it's the reason they had to lock in at 900p 30 fps which is essentially the same performance Black Flag shipped for both consoles.. Black Flag was patched to 1080p on the after release on PS4 so this could be more of the same.

Crappy about the Unity news..that game is the reason I'm planning on getting a PS4 in a couple months, as opposed to waiting until next year as originally planned.
Still going to look amazing to me, considering it'll surely be my first current gen game, but it's annoying knowing it should look even better.

From another perspective, if the PS4 had Azure, they could have offloaded the AI workload to the cloud and used the console hardware for the processing, meaning both could run at 1080p/60fps.
