I don't think anyone is considering signing him because of his potential. He is what he is and that's why you don't offer him big money or a long contract. He could slide onto a lower line providing some size, some possession time and when motivated, some grit.

And the other 85% of the time when he's not motivated he's hurting the team with his lazy commitment to backchecking and blindly throwing the puck away.
Rene Bourque 2.0 is right. There's a reason 4 different teams have given up on him already.

I am going to call in a priest to exorcise the group of posters on CP of the need to add Chris Stewart. For years it's been the same old "what if" story and the same thing happens over and over and over again. He still sucks over 75% of the season. consistently. He sucks, plain and simple. He's never put it all together.

Ehhh Chris Stewart is a decent 3rd line winger in this league who at one point looked like a bonafide top 6 guy. People are talking about him like he'd actually make the team worse if signed. Worst case scenario, he's ineffective, like Jones two years ago. Best case is he plays like Jones last year. I dunno, I guess I don't understand the hate, he'd make Jones expendable and this is likely his last season with the team anyway.

I would take Rene Bourque circa 2010 in a heart beat and Stewart is a lot closer to that comparison than today's Rene Bourque. Bourque's been awful for years now, whereas Stewart's been merely disappointing given his potential but is still a decent 3rd line player. Maybe Stewart's career trajectory follows a similar path but I'd be willing to bet he'll be a serviceable player for the next few seasons yet. Haven't been able to say that about Bourque for like half a decade. In short, it's a terrible comparison and I'm not sure why people keep making it.

Stewart would be a decent signing in mid July when the GM's have calmed down and have stopped giving out horrible contracts and players have lowered their demands. If Stewart signs on July 1st, it'll likely be a bad contract. I would like it if no one offers him a contract and the Flames sign him later on or if he just accepts a "reclamation" kind of deal around 3-4 mil for 2-3 years.

Please, let Chris Stewart fade away into darkness. He Sucks! One of a very few players I would hate to see on the Flames.

I just don't see the need to overpay for a UFA when the team is making strides with what they have. Via trade, sure, but there is no need to break the bank and overpay a guy by a few million when we are still not at the point of being serious SC contenders yet.

if stewart is signed it will be for competition and on a contract like Devin's. Play for a bit and then send to minors if does not work out.

Are you saying no one will sign Mike Green?
It would be nice to get Frolik and Winnik. Although it would kind of take spots away from players like Granlund, Colborne, Jooris, etc.

Engelland was a nice pickup over paying by a few million. As long as the term is ok, like hillers, im all for it

What does everyone feel about Mike Green?
Do you think he would compliment the current defence we have? What sort of salary will he command at this stage of his career?

He's going to get paid.
Big time.
His last 3 seasons he's put up 0.74, 0.54 and 0.63 points per game, playing top 2-4 minutes.
He's also only 29.
To top it all off, the free agent pool is basically a piece of crap overall, so he looks even better because of that.

I can't believe he's only 29. Seems like he's been putting up crazy stats for years and years. Does he still have decent wheels or is he slowing down?
Personally I think I'd rather offer sheet Dougie Hamilton, but if that didn't pan out Green might be a decent option to look at.

He's a tremendous skater. One of his biggest strengths. However, he does tend to get injured and is prone to defensive mistakes.
His style of play would fit great in the Flames system IMO, the way they activate the D and such.
