The first thing to realize when they say they want a number 1 center is they dont want one of the top 30 centers in the league. They want top 15 or top 10. They want this because when someone says they want a number 1 center they want a number 1 center on a championship calibur team.

Beyond that I think Moon might have made the best comment about what a number one center isnt. If you say I wouldnt want that guy as the best guy on my team if I am trying to win a chmapionship they are not a number 1 center

I'd completely reject the premise that there can only/must be thirty #1C's.

Umm, I'll take 'what is something the Calgary Flames haven't had since '95 for one thousand Alex.'

Monahan might be it. We'll see.

Why? It's a perfectly sensible criterion. There are 30 teams, 30 first lines, so if the talent were spread evenly, there would be one top-30 centre on every first line in the league.

Now, if you don't want to talk about the top 30 centres, that's fine. But come up with your own term. Talk about elite centres or star centres or whatever you like. As soon as you're talking about a group that is smaller than 30, you can no longer define it by which line they should be expected to play on.

Pittsburgh has two first lines centres. Colorado could have two as well.
