Damn WJA, I told you so. Should have gone with the Ed-Force livery after all.

The intricacy in the paint on the Disney planes, specifically Mickey, is incomprehensible. To see them up close is breathtaking.

Seeing Mickey up close when they had it on the new runway for the public event was amazing, the detail is indeed crazy good.

Statement from WJ on the missed approach. They are taking it in stride.

I get what they are saying and the go around was well executed, etc. my question is why would they be so far below the glide slope to begin with?

Because there is no ILS and thus no glideslope at SXM. It's a visual approach.

I believe there is DME (Distance Measuring Equipment)? Their altitude to runway threshold distance would have been noticeably off the mark.

Certainly not as in your face, as seeing the glide slope being way off, but you would think monitoring distance/altitude would be top of mind while descending through cloud cover toward minimums.

Yikes.
Silly question but,

What stops the aircraft from rolling after losing 10,000 ft? Is it the autopilot? Pilot? Combination? I didnt think you could recover from rolling 5 times.

Good point, but without knowing the WestJet SOP's I'm not sure if both pilots would have been looking outside or if one was looking and one was monitoring the instruments and could catch the scenario above.

Isn't that odd that such a busy airport wouldn't have an ILS?

Nope, only in the last few years did runway 10 here at YYC get an ILS. They cost money, and I've never been but I guess SXM usually has beautiful nice days with lots of visibility, so why spend the money?

I guess.

And now I think about it, it was a few years back when the SFO ILS was down for maintenance on a beautiful calm day and the Korean airlines shorted the runway and hit the seawall on a visual approach.

The Westjet blog did a good job of explaining how important pilot training and ongoing training is, even tho laymen like me think it is all automated magic.

That SFO one was brutal, however it was Asiana not Korean that did it. Big difference here was the weather was not nice, and the WestJet crew recognized the situation they were getting into and performed the go around. Whereas the Asiana crew flew a perfectly good plane short of the runway with no less than a check captain in the cockpit with them.

There is also the equipment that a airport needs to have a ILS. There may not be enough room to have the equipment at SXM.

Not sure if this belongs in this thread, or the I don't want to live on this planet anymore thread:

Runaway Aviation Security dog shot dead by police after holding up flights at Auckland Airport

Quote:
An Aviation Security Services dog was shot dead by police after it was spooked and escaped its handler at Auckland International Airport this morning, causing runway delays.

Police shot the dog, named Grizz, at the direction of Auckland Airport staff.

So sad and unnecessary. Is it really that hard to catch a run away dog or at least find a tranquilizer?

In case you aren't in the US politics thread (and quite frankly, if I weren't a moderator, I wouldn't open it myself) - the US has put in place a new electronics ban. Passengers flying to and from any of over a dozen countries will not be able to have most electronics with them in the cabin at all.

https://twitter.com/jonostrower/stat...77485599051783

This will also apparently affect any flights that stop over in Canada, such a Royal Jordanian flight to Detroit that stops in YUL.

Edit: full story http://money.cnn.com/2017/03/20/news...ban/index.html

Random question,

The thought occurred to me when I saw a WestJet facebook ad about their Plus seats.

Why block the middle seats? Why not simply install two wider seats? Or are they the same seats with better pitch?

I'm jealous. My fiance is flying to India on Saturday and gets to fly business! I've never been on a plane that size (787-9) and I always have wanted to go on one.

From what I can see, it's kind of used as a permanent tray table/arm rest.

It's a bigger seat pitch with a permanent tray able basically... and you get priority boarding
