The Jack Adams is the kiss of death. Hopefully it's someone else this year.

Gotta be Tortorella. Took a CBJ team that was expected to be as bad as last yearand has them top 5 in the league with the only real addition being a 19yo rookie defenseman. Individually, Atkinson is playing at a level few of us would have believed; not unlike what Torts did with MSL in the past. Usagewise he has absolutely exploited Savard's strengths and turned him into the best shutdown D in the league this year.

And I believe the CBJ are the youngest team in the NHL, too.

It's true that Hartley, Roy and Maclean all had short shelf lives after winning the JA recently, and yeah that happens from time to time.

But it's not always the kiss of death people claim it to be.

Vigneault won in 06/07, 1st year in VAN and coached 6 more years there. Won Presidents and Cup finals.
Boudreau won it in 07/08, 1st year in WAS and coached 4 more years there. Won Presidents.
Julien won it in 08/09, 2nd year in BOS and coached 8 more years there. Cup win and Cup finals.
Tippett won it in 09/10, 1st year in ARI and has coached 6 years more and counting. Conference Finals.
Hitchcock won it in 11/12, 1st year in STL and coached 4.5 years more there. Conference Finals.

I'm fine with Gulutzan winning it, and certainly think he should get consideration.

Bryan Elliot for goalie of the year!

Glad no one is comparing Gully to Dallas Eakins anymore.

Waiting for Dion to forget he made this thread and then re-posting his initial comment somewhere on the subsequent pages.

Torts has the Blue Jackets at 100 points which is tops in the league. That team had a worse record than the Flames last season and really nobody expected them to even make the playoffs this season. The only real debate is who is finishing 2nd in voting as he's going to get the award in a land slide.

But they were all fired after winning the Adams...

I think he deserves to be in the conversation, but I think Tortorella and Babcock are the frontrunners this year.

Which is OK by me - that award is the worst anyway.

I would rather have an annual in-the-running candidate that never won over a flash in the pan, cinderella-year winner any day.

Quietly finish 3rd every year. That would be perfection.

As far as I am concerned, Torts probably deserves it. Gully has done a great job, but frankly I am good with our staff flying under the radar.

McLellan won't get any credit because McDavid.

They had McDavid last year and weren't winning, but that doesn't really matter to the journalists.

I expect Babcock to be one of the finalists because Toronto.

Nor should it. The Oilers are a tire fire sans McToadstool.

Didn't he miss almost 40 games last year?

Yeah but the Oilers actually had a better record without him in the lineup I believe.

Not that those stats actually mean anything, but that's what I heard was the situation.

A quick way to kill another coach - make him look good for the final stretch and then play like sh*t the next year. LOL

He completely crapped the bed for a good chunk of the year and almost torpedoed the season, so no he does not get even a sniff of a mention of being coach of the year. I love how when they were losing pathetically everyone was blaming the players for not stepping up, in yet when they do step up Glen get's all the accolades. Realistically the guy had flawed line combo's, flawed system and poor ice time distribution for more than half the season. He adjusted and they started winning. It's not due to a lightbulb moment of the players finally starting to play the system or that they found Jesus on the train ride from Montreal while sipping a few Coors Light. I wish Glen all the luck in the world and want to see him continue to succeed but the revisionist history is not the right narrative here, the story is all about a new coach initially stumbling and then eventually recovering his way into something that works which is a perfectly admirable story in it's own right!

Go Glen Go.
