I have this horrible feeling that Crosby may be vulnerable to a career-ending hit tonight (similar to Lindros in the 2000 playoffs). Watching the replay of Crosby crashing into the boards horrific. It appears his reaction time has slowed down. I truly believe if it were not for the concussion he suffered a week before, he would have reacted fast enough not to have made contact with Holtby.

Trotz refused to comment on Ovie's play in tonights game and not in a positive way.

This Caps core is beyond its best before label and it can't seem to win, it might be time to tear it down and go in a new direction.

If I'm the Caps management, I'm having serious discussions around at least letting the league know that Ovie is available.

I'm sure Ovechkin is excited to get a chance to play for his country in the Worlds.

You could argue he was the most useless player for the Caps in this game. 7th forward in icetime, only player on ice for both goals against, and all players with less icetime contributed on the PK.

...No wait, my bad.

Nate Schmidt. That one guy played less minutes than Ovechkin with no PK time. Then again he was only on ice for 1 goal against.

Exactly. And so I shake my head at those around here who think we should try and get an aging Kovalchuk from the Devils. Just say no to the Russians.

If the Caps tried to trade Ovie they would have to be willing to take a lot less than what he is worth.

They'd have to retain salary for sure. Still has a cap hit of 9.5 million for 4 more years.

I just don't get it. The Caps have a properly built team.

An elite 1C, and solid 2 and 3C. Great coaching. Great defense and a franchise goalie. Plus a true sniper in Ovi. Why can't they win?

Because their role players aren't good enough.

You can have the major pieces but in the playoffs you're going to run into a team that is your equal in that regard. Then, you need the bottom of your lineup to be the difference makers.

It's not about your true snipers and franchise goalie. It's about your 4th line C and #6 D. Caps seem to be missing enough of the type of guys who leave it all out there.

Most players play through pain, that's known. This does explain the lack of production in game 7 though I think:

Russia: Ovechkin played through 'pain numbing injections'

http://www.tsn.ca/russia-ovechkin-pl...tions-1.749066

Alexander Ovechkin will not play in the world hockey championship due to a lower-body injury, Team Russia announced Thursday.
In a statement, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation said Ovechkin told Russian coaches he finished the NHL playoffs playing through pain numbing injections.

This will be the first time Ovechkin has not participated in a World Hockey Championship since he has been in the NHL.

Maybe, but it doesn't explain the Ovechkin era Caps inability to get out of the 2nd round. OV is not captain material at all, and he doesn't play the right position to be captain either. Washington is a team built to sell merchandise and win the regular season, that's it.

There will always be people who lay the blame at Ovechkin's shoes for the Caps lack of success, despite all the statistical evidence that points to the contrary. People just have a prejudice against Russian hockey players.

You see it time and time again when people criticize holes in their game that don't exist (for a recent example, see the thread where a poster claimed Kovalchuk was weak, when he's clearly one of the stronger forwards in the game.)

I think you guys are hard on Ovi. His shot somehow hit the knob of Fleury's stick or else it's 1-1 and a totally different game.

This post is phooey.

First of all, you have no clue what kind of captain he is. You can speculate all you want, but you have no clue. I tend to think it's thinly veiled anti Russian bias.

Look at his playoff stats, they speak for themselves. Even last night he was back checking and causing turnovers.

The Caps are built for the playoffs. They have all the right pieces, and the right mix of vets and young legs and coaching. Why can't they get past the 2nd round? I have no idea, but it's not on Ovi's shoulders directly that is for sure.

Why can't the Flames beat the Ducks? Cursed, bad luck, who knows. Sometimes life just isn't fair.

The Ovechkin era Caps have run out of excuses. Also this Russian guy.
