Did they seriously send poolparty to the AHL after he made the 40 games to burn his first year?
What a bunch of idiots. Its a serious clownshow up there.

Also, they didn't let him help lead the Fins in the WJC which probably would have helped his development.

Saw this on twitter:

Milan Lucic has a single even-strength point in the last month. A second assist on an Eric Gryba goal.

Six. More. Years. after this season at $6M AAV.
Meanwhile, Patrick Maroon is on pace to score 30 goals this year and will likely want a nice raise when his current contract ($2M per year) comes up for renewal after next season -- same time as McDavid and Nurse.

Well, in fairness to Lucic, that was a Retirement Contract. Similar to Ference.
That was Milan getting paid for the prestige of playing next to Connor (which he doesnt) and for Management to have the honour (of which there isnt any) of landing the prized UFA.
So...this contract is working out pretty much exactly as expected.

Watching Lucic play and he's sooo slow, I mean his vaunted physical game is gone because he's out of the play.
that contract is going to be untradable.
another gaff by a GM who already has committed a lot of them in his time in Edmonton.

Yeah, well...I cant speak for that. I can try and envision a great many things, but I'm never going to try and figure out what Oilers fans/Management are ever thinking.
I'm pretty sure thats a one-way ticket to Toon-Town.

Funny how just six months or so can change things...
Lucic said he texted McDavid after signing with the Oilers Friday morning.
"It's good to see that he's excited that I'm here as well. Hopefully Todd [McLellan] puts us on the same line together so he can set me up for a few this season," he said with a smile.
"I truly believe in a couple of years we're going to be contending for the Stanley Cup because we have a player like that."

I think that contract would do quite well in an auction. The paperwork not the player. It will be a rare historic piece, with it's existence extremely unfathomable. It's affect on the history of hockey and the history of Edmonton so strong.
The player however, is going to be untradeable.

EDM burns a year of Puljujarvi's RFA status. No big deal, IMO. Still a bridge contract, then a six-year deal at age 24 if you want.
Nothing to see here, it's all under control.

You'd think they'd have to adjust for inflation at some point.

No big deal? That is literally going to add $ for any contract that goes into his UFA years. Is Spector not familiar that you need to pay real dollars for those? Mind boggling that he'd claim something so stupid.

Right now the Oilers have 5.3 million in cap space for this year
Contracts coming up this year that probably matter
Draisaitl current contract 3.4 expected contract 6.5 difference 3.1
Hendricks current contract 1.85 expected contract 0 difference -1.85
Kassian current contract 1.5 expected contract 2.2 difference 750 k
Lander current contract 746 expected contract 0 difference 250k
Russell current contract 3.1 million expected contract 4 difference 900k
Gryba current contract 945 expected contract 0 difference -945
Gustavson current contract 800,000 expected contract 0 difference -800k
Total contract change for this year 1,450,000
They will have to replace their backup, Gryba and Lander lets say with Broissent, and a couple of other guys from the farm which adds 2.4 million so they're payroll goes up by 3,805,000
So they basically go into the next season with a similar roster lineup to this year.
Then they go
Conner McDavid current contract 3,775 (Cap hit) expected contract 12 mil difference 8,225,000
Letestu current contract 1.8 new contract 0 (UFA) difference -1.8
Maroon current contract $2 million new contract $4 million (They resign him at a discount) $2 million
Darnell Nurse current contract 1.7 new contract 5 difference 3.3 million
Brandon Davidson current contract 1.3 million new contract 2.5 difference 1.2
Total difference 12,925,000
So how do you get about 10 million off the books
trade one of RNH or Eberle with Poulliot for nothing but draft picks or prospects
Then the next year, Talbot comes off the books so they'll need a starting goalie. JP will need a raise and if he's half the hockey player that they think its a 4 million dollar contract.

Good summary. Oiler's certainly will be up against a cap crunch. Lucic definitely an anchor that won't be moveable. Although you forgot Mark Fayne at 3.6m AAV who comes off the books after next season. I honestly doubt McDavid will demand 12m AAV, I think 10m max. There is a long precedent for players taking discounts to keep the team competitive. if he demands 12m AAV, the Oilers are really gonna feel the pain.

I honestly don't see it as a big deal, similar to the Bennett burn in the playoff year.
Jesse P is struggling this year, but now you get to burn a year of his contract without gaudy numbers.
Bennett had a year gone with essentially no numbers, then a 35 season potentially followed by what looks like another 35 point season. Without that burn year, he could have potentially gone 35, 35 and then maybe a big boost to say 60 next year and with it a very different contract than what he's going to sign this summer as it looks.
Monahan had three productive years and the Flames had to pay up to keep him.
I think upper roster players (prospects) off to slow starts get hurt more by the burned year than the team does.
