If WSH would take Huby in the off season, Ovi would for sure get the record next year.

It needs to happen this summer to make sense though.

How much does the Flames need to give up to do it?

Another to add is that a sub-.900 save % won the Vezina for most of the 80's.

If we re-sign Monahan as a UFA, a 1st+ Monahan ought to do it, but it has to happen on Monday to make sense.

I'm not saying it would (or should) happen. It might be worth it though, just to have Ovi break Gretzky's record in a Flames jersey. The saltiness from up north would be good for the soul - Staples' head might explode.

As much as that would be awesome, with him under contract for 2 more years, I think we might have to settle for against the Oilers. Although, he might not make it out of Edmonton alive if it happened up there.

It would be even better if he broke the record vs the Rangers with Gretzky in attendance (like when Howe went to all the games when Gretz was close to breaking his points total). Then it's like a big story about how the record was broken against Wayne's former team, and then there's a shot of him in the crowd saluting Ovie... etc etc...

But the important thing is not one person mentions Edmonton or Oilers once during the whole thing.

That would be hilarious to witness, but similar to Sid's situation, I think I'd prefer OV sticks with the team that drafted him instead. I've always loved the story around players playing their entire career with the same team that drafted them.

Gretzky's Career: 3.50 (3.71 for the first 15 years)
Ovi's Career: 2.90 (2.85 for the first 15 years)

Our current 'high scoring era' is essentially the median since '67. The first 14 years of Gretzky's career were all in the top 15 years all time. Every year of ovi's career until the last 3 were below median.

It's not that scoring wasn't high in the 80's, it was. Rule changes and the way the game has changed and evolved has allowed the scoring to come up, not to the high scoring era, but at least keep pace.

We all joke around about how McDavid benefits from a slight tug on the jersey and it's a PP. Years ago you literally were hacking players, holding onto them and actually stopping their progress. NHL players who play now and played in that era talk about it all the time.

Cleaning the ice multiple times a period helps with offense, 4 on 4 and 3 on 3 OT results in more offense. No red line allows more offense. The lack of hitting in today's game vs years ago has changed it completely. Imagine massive D men smoking Ovi as hard as possible all the time at his age without a strong enforcer.

I love Ovi and he is a dominate scorer. If we transplanted him into the 80's with everything from that era too, he would be a strong scorer without a doubt. If we actually elevated Gretzky in today's game with everything that everybody benefits from today, I am sure he would still be #1 and as dominate as before too.

Bernie Nichols’s had 70 goals and 150 points.

He is up to 851. Just 43 back now, and still has 6 games and 2 periods left this year.

Hard to see a scenario where he doesn't get the record.

43 goals left?

He isn't gonna retire until he gets the record and the Caps will be glad to let him I'm sure. He probably gets there before this contract is up, but if he doesn't he probably just keeps signing one year deals until it's achieved.

Oh I thought he only had one year left. He absolutely does. I think he will see how he started this year and train much better this off season knowing that Russian Machine doesn't break, but does slow down with age.

Well, no, thats really unlikely to score 43 goals in 2 games. That would be the more impressive record in and of itself.

But man, what a goalscoring machine.

I believe that was what they call a joke... I think it's a soft j, so pronounced yoke.

Jokes on you. There is 6 games left meaning he doesn't need 22.5 goals per game. Chances are waaaaaay better than you think!
