Default Really Cheap Web Hosting

I've looked around but can't find the places that are really cheap for web hosting. I used to remember places that would charge like $3/month but I just can't find them right now. Where am I not looking?

I use HostGator.com and it has been pretty good. The cheapest is $4.95/month, but the quoted prices are only on extended terms (i.e. 3 years). If you want to pay month by month, it costs a bit more.

I consider them a "very cheap" host, for what you get. Usually what you are paying for is the monthly data transfer (erroneously referred to as "bandwidth"). Cheap services such as HostGator oversell their bandwidth. If you buy a plan with 6000 GB/month, they don't expect you to use close to that much, and so don't provision their resources assuming everyone could potentially use their maximum allotment. For "important" sites, one may not wish to use a host that oversells. But for a little personal site that you don't want to pay too much to support, hosts that oversell are the cheapest.

EDIT

Another that I have used is ASmallOrange.com. Their cheapest package is $25/year, so that is more in the "$3/month" range. Keep in mind you are allotted much less resources, so it depends on what you expect to use.

http://www.dreamhost.com/

Never had too much problem and the service is pretty good considering I pay them peanuts. If you choose them to host, send me a PM and I'll give you a promo code that can knock a bunch off the price.

That's our site is run from. We pay around $2 a day but I think you can get hosting for like $6 a month.

Good service, very flexible and never any performance problems (except our Ruby on Rails portion). Sites fast, Facebook app is fast, forums are fast.

They are a carbon neutral company as well if that's important to you.

I'll third Dreamhost. I've run a few sites with them before, and always had an excellent experience.

Tempting but it isn't for me so unless you're an actual web hosting company I better stick with one of them.
