Google Chrome
Google is releasing a new open-source browser sometime today - Google Chrome.

We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser. What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build.

I'll probably give it a try.
Edit: Here it is http://www.google.com/chrome (thanks @theCBE)

I was reading about that today. It doesn't look all that fancy, but seems to have some good features.

Interesting. It would take a lot to shake my firefox bias, but I'd give it a shot.

Actually, reading through that comic... This sounds pretty cool.
I'll be trying it at the office, here, for sure. Hope there's a Mac version coming down the pipes soon.

Yeah there's a few architecture things that I think are really good ideas.
And I guess because its based on webkit that web devs won't all kill themselves because another browser hits (Safari is based on webkit isn't it?).
It's funny, if anyone else in the world introduced a new browser the backlash would hit hard, but because its Google everyone at least takes a wait and see.
The big question is will this hurt Microsoft or Mozilla more?

I would tend to think Mozilla. I've been curious about Fx 3.1 with their new ray tracing of the Javascript engine, but if Chrome speeds thing up , then perhaps they will steal Fx's thunder.
In any respect, I think competition is good, as long as the competitor isn't trying to generate new (proprietary) features.
I'm not a big fan of the tabs at the top of the page. I don't think you should need to mouse past the location bar everytime you switch tabs.

Lots of firefox users have all their plugins though, so that might make firefox users a bit less apt to switch.
And if Mozilla adopts a lot of the good code from Google, then there might not be much between them.

But Firefox won't be switching to a process/tab model anytime soon - that would be a massive undertaking.
I wonder how open this browser will be to themed? And I'm not sure I could function without a bookmarks toolbar. It will be interesting to see how this all works out. I'll definitely give it a run.

I can't believe I read all 38 pages of that comic. I am simultaneously intrigued and confused. Excited and bored to tears. And hungry.
So, 12:00 Calgary time launch or what?

That's the thing. Chrome isn't just a new browser with some new features. If it's built the way they say it's been built, then it's literally a whole new concept.
It's near impossible to just "adopt" some of the Google code. Firefox (and all the other browsers) would need to be re-written from the ground up. They'll all have to go back to the drawing board if they want to implement any of it.
The real kicker is that, by changing to focus from "tabs within a window" to "tabbed windows," Google has even changed the drawing board itself.

Yeah, amazingly fast. I'm impressed. I'll definitely give it a try for a while and see if it's worth missing out on some add-ons.
