Sharks Trade Jason Demers to Stars for Brendan Dillon
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Not sure what's out there but Jason Demers traded to Dallas for Brendan Dillon. I believe Stars also get a pick from Sharks
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun · 35s 35 seconds ago Stars also get third-round pick in 2016 in that deal from San Jose

That actually is a fairly big trade. Top 4 Dman for top 4 Dman.
I have always like Dillon. He always struck me as somewhat of a more physical Brodie that just hasn't quite taken off yet. Demers isn't bad either but I'd prefer Dillon myself.

This looks like a change of scenery deal. Demers is good, but oft-injured, but still steady and is signed at $3.4M through next season.
Dillon is currently the better player, the younger player and the cheaper player, but is an RFA still.
I think its a good move for the Sharks.

I don't see enough of either player to have a strong opinion, but from what I have seen, I really liked Dillon. Kind of surprised that they would trade him.

Demers has been really good, then not so good, then really good again and this year, not so good. Last year, he looked like he was breaking out to the upside nicely, but has been a drag on the team this year. I LIKE THIS MOVE for the sharks.
People have long blamed Thornton/Marleau for the team's problems, but imo, they NEVER went to the post season with a strong enough defense. Demers' 'fancy stats' have been horrible this year.
Seems like a good guy and has one of my favorite hockey nicknames, 'daddy' (this has never been explained...) - good luck to him

I wonder if there that was some bad blood between Dillon and the Stars after the contract talks. He was a late signing and only signed for one year. That usually isn't a good sign.

I though Dillon might be available after the Stars indicated they didn't think much of him in the summer.
He was Canada's best defenseman at the World Championships two seasons ago, while Brodie was the 7th defenseman. His game must've really deteriorated.

Seems like a lateral move to me. But Dillon is younger. And Demers is RHD over Dillon whos LHD. Could make a big difference in Dallas. And I think SJ was kind of over loaded with RHD as well.
Anyways, good trade for both.

Both legit second pairing defensemen... You would have to watch a lot more Stars and Sharks games than I do to fully evaluate this one. Could be one of those rare trades that works out for both teams.

EDIT: It's 35% according to a writer for Sportsnet. Makes his AAV $2.21m

The Stars are in the win now mode.
Spezza, Hemsky, Daley, Horcoff Fiddler, Eaves, Moen and Lehtonen over 30

Does does this mean that they're going to make another move then? Because on the surface is appears that they lost this trade in terms of "win now" (ie. they got the lesser player which is why they got the pick also).

Well, if they are then they're idiots.
I think they're in the 'lets make the playoffs and generate some profits' mode.
Quite honestly, the Stars dont have a hope in hell of even a sniff at the mug. They just arent good enough. If you want to 'win now' you have to be able to beat the big boys in the West and they just cant.

Yah, they got all excited when they took Anahiem to seven games, too bad it was only in the first round. At least they are trying to improve, though not sure what this deal does for them.

Stars get security of Demers being under contract. Dillon is RFA and making a case for more money, somewhere in the 4-4.5M range annually (Muzzin, Brodin, Brodie as comparables).

Every game I've seen Demers in he's been awful. If he's "top four" then I don't know what that is...
Dillon is the better player, IMO.
