Damn his skating is not very good but holy hell is everything else about his game ELITE!

I don’t really think his skating is that bad. He’s not fast but he’s super strong on his skates and he’s able to keep up with the other teams top players defensively. His skating seemed a lot worse last year, and while his acceleration could get a lot better his top speed is more a less sub par/ average. I think he has improved in this area in less than a year and I’m excited to see how much his skating will improve with another 2-3 years of development and off season training.

When people think of the Red Wings powerhouse, it's HOF players like Yzerman, Lidstrom and Federov who come to mind. But equally important for that powerhouse was Holmstrom. Definitely an unsung hero on that team.
I feel like Tkachuk can be that guy, except with a higher ceiling. The 2 tips he had yesterday vs the Islanders were incredible. Especially the game winner. Reminded me of how some cheaters in EA NHL can tip pucks that are going wide by 5 feet. Just an incredible move to pot the winner.
I'm also extremely grateful that he carries the Tkachuk name, and undoubtedly learns a ton from his father. He's the perfect mentor for the kid.
Can't say enough about the kid. He really is something special and seems to get better each and every game. I really hope he can take his game to the next level in the playoffs. Last year he seemed a bit neutered after he got suspended at the end of last season, and it seemed to carry over into the playoffs. But he's found his groove now, and I really hope he can take that next step.

I watched a lot of Corey Perry living in Southern California for 7 years and Tkachuk is basically a clone of a young Perry in my opinion. Both play the game at their own pace and use their IQ to outsmart the opposition, along with their quick hands and amazing strength along the boards. Perry may have a better shot but Tkachuk seems to be way more of a complete player at this stage of his career. I think what’s often lost about Tkachuk is how good he is in his own zone against other teams best players. He’s such a unique type of player it’s hard to find comparables, but I think Perry is the best one. Perry was still in the OHL at Matt’s age tho, which just shows you how mature of a game Tkachuk plays for his age.

Tkachuk did say that Corey Perry was his favorite player and that he modeled his game after him.

I don’t really see why Monahan should be this team’s captain. He’s pretty subdued, I don’t really see him as a leader... great player obviously.

We probably don't see enough from our perspective to draw any conclusions though. Well, except for "Let's go".

Fair enough. Just my thoughts from what I can see on the ice and in interviews.

What's going to be chuckys next contract? I bet its signed this summer. I bet they try to keep it within Johnnys 6.75, but really hope they're not afraid to pay him more then that for max term.

6.5 for 8 years. That would be amazing. May have to pay more if he gets 30 but I think 6-6.5 is what he may get. Still has a lot of season left and then next year. He will be worth whatever they pay him that’s for sure

Tkachuk's tipping skills are perhaps the best we've had on this team in years. He absolutely needs to be a fixture on the first PP unit. It's kind of a surprise that he hasn't been for most of the season already.

His agent would be dumb if he signed for 8 years. My guess is a 6x6 contract. After that, he'll get paid like crazy.
I've only read the last page of this thread, but has anyone brought up the idea of Tkachuk being the next captain? I love Monahan, and think he would be an excellent captain when Gio retires. But Tkachuk just has that extra gear and level of determination that I don't think Monahan has.

There is a thread on who should be the next captain. I think 7-8 years could be enticing because it would leave him signing a massive contract at 28-29. I’d be more than happy paying more for 7-8 years and then he will cash in during his prime, which is probably ideal.

Well Brouwer was clearing outplaying him before he was injured.

Tired complaint. Brouwer was not on the powerplay for weeks until Frolik got hurt.

Really so you're saying that Brouwer was recently on the power play?
And that that was a good decision?

Who else? The following people were already on it: Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Backlund, Bennett, Ferland, Jankowski, Gio, Brodie and Hamilton.

Can you figure out the difference between them and Brouwer?
Why on earth does 3-goal Brouwer deserve any PP time at all?

Here's a list of those who would reasonably be filling in the vacant forward powerplay spot after Frolik goes down. Stajan, Lazar, Hathaway, Brouwer. Who do you pick? Brouwer wasn't even on it every time.
ETA: Anyway, as this is about Tkachuk, you should be aware that Brouwer did not take away Tkachuk's PP time. They were on together.

It's gonna be very hard to imagine Brady Tkachuk being more effective than Matt... I don't know which is a better steal. Johnny or Matthew. Calgary Forward scouting is underrated.
I'm predicting a deep Finals run in the next 3 years.
